Cyber technology has made it significantly more complicated in the interactions between offenders and victims. Cyber technology has allowed offenders to expand their operations anonymously. Before things like the internet, there was a lot more risk involved with being an offender. There was a risk of being identified or being caught in the act. This kind of risk did not exist once there was the internet. Anybody could hide behind the anonymity of the internet and abuse that position. Many people are less anonymous on the internet and that can make them prone to being victims. An offender can now stalk a facebook profile and know everything about a person while still not revealing any personal information. One of the biggest problems with this is grooming. Grooming was a much more involved process before the internet. There was a lot of personal risk in grooming someone in person. With the internet, a person can anonymously groom somebody with almost zero chance of being caught. This is a completely different and infinitely more dangerous landscape than it was before cyber technology. It is also incredibly different now with the interactions between victims and previous offenders. A victim used to be able to more easily avoid an offender before cyber technology. A person can be across the world now and still unable to avoid a person completely. There are so many social media platforms that allow somebody to always contact you as long as they know your username. This can be extremely dangerous in cases with no contact orders or things of that nature. More traditional means of communication can be assumed to be closed but the internet offers an incredible amount of ways to contact someone. The interactions of offenders and victims have been completely changed by cyber technology and unfortunately that change has been almost completely negative.
