A computer is never truly safe. Even a computer completely isolated from any network can still be the victim of a physical attack. The only safe computer is a computer that is not able to turn on. A computer on a network is generally one of the most vulnerable computers. This computer could be remotely accessed and infected with a virus or taken control of by an assailant. If a computer is connected to the internet, it is able to be attacked in several ways. A user could download malicious files and unknowingly infect their own computer with malware or viruses. This is one of the most common ways computers are infected. There are ways to combat this type of attack such as anti malware or antivirus softwares. These softwares are able to scan packets and downloads that a user receives and they can intercept the malicious files. This is a simple way to maintain a small amount of security on a computer, but it is not 100 percent effective. Many antivirus softwares can have negative impacts on a system and often act more as bloatware than any useful software. A user cannot rely on these softwares to intercept all malicious attacks on their system and therefore must practice safe internet usage. Downloading files that have unknown integrity is always a bad idea and can lead to potentially destructive consequences. Even a computer not connected to any network at all can be vulnerable to physical attacks. An attacker could use a preloaded USB drive to upload malware to the computer and it would be the same as a malicious download. The safest computer is not only a computer adequately protected through software, but also a computer with a user that understands the best practices when it comes to computer usage.
