Final Reflection

Your First Semester

  • Tell us how you have grown from the beginning of the semester to now.

I’ve learned to reach out more to my peers to help. I would say I was very shy at first coming here three hours away not knowing anyone or anything about the school.

  • What were your expectations for this year? Did this semester’s experiences meet your expectations? Explain.

I knew it was going to be hard if I procrastinated and it definitely was although I’ve made great friends who want to learn and who can help me and I help them succeed when it finally comes down to studying.

  • What is something you wish you knew 14 weeks ago?

I wish I knew how to budget my flex points so they would have lasted me all semester. Although I will try again to get organized with my money to budget next semester.

Study Habits

  • How much time do you spend studying for each class now vs. at the beginning of the semester?

In the beginning of the semester I would only study 2-3 hours a week. Then I joined a sorority that has me doing 10 hours of studying a week documented every time and proctored half of the 10 hours.

  • How have your study habits changed?

Since the beginning of the year I’ve started doing more group study sections. These help a lot because the people I do them with are older and have more knowledge. My “Big” I got from my sorority is a mechanical engineering 3rd year major, and with dental hygiene major, making sure I understand my science classes is really important; to have a competitive grade.

  • Tell us about a resource that you have used/learned about this semester that will assist you next semester.

Having the same students in my classes made it easier to work together and understand the material. It also helped in being connected and holding each other accountable when class started and work was due. I will definitely be talking to them again next semester.

  • What study habits/techniques will you use going into next semester?

I will have my hw assignments listed on my phone but have it paired with my computer for constant reminders.

Health Professions Learning Community

  • This semester you were enrolled in at least SOC 201S, and HLTH 101. Many of you were also enrolled in CHEM 105N and CHEM 106N, and some of you were enrolled in HIST 104H with Professor White.
    • On the surface these classes do not appear to be connected; however this semester each professor was intentional about drawing connections between content, and subjects discussed. Discuss the ways in which  these courses are tied together.

In my chemistry lecture I learned something new then next time I had lab I was expected to know certain things and the lecture helped give me a refresher. For example, knowing my significant figures. As well as in my sociology class the events we did like the zoo trip and movie helped with campuring campus.

Parallel Plan

  1. This semester we had presentations from different majors in the College of Health Sciences as well as from different majors on campus. This was to give you an idea for possible parallel majors to your current intended major.
  • Which two other majors would you be most interested in? Why?

I’ve always been interested in physiology because I found it hard to understand why people around me are the way they are and why I am the way I am. I want to have a deeper understanding of how the fundamentals of our life plays a role in why we may react differently. I was to learn all the facts there.  Something else that caught my attention was being a nuclear medicine technician. Seeing what the body does first hand and working with not as many patients first hand is what made me interested although I also understand it’s going to be a long and just as hard dental hygiene.

  • What benefit is there to having a parallel plan (or two) in place?

It helps in having something to fall back on and being secure if the first plan does not work out as intended.

  • How could one or both of these two majors benefit your current intended major?

These majors will keep me in the medical field so I wouldn’t be left behind in my learning journey at ODU.
