Article Review of “Cyber Security Challenges Faced by Employees in the Digital Workplace of Saudi Arabia’s Digital Nature Organization”
The article I chose is about cybersecurity challenges faced by employees in the digital workplace of Saudi Arabia’s digital nature organization. The social science principles this article relates to are Empiricism, ethical neutrality, and determinism. Empiricism relates to this topic because what they are studying is real. They are researching what is happening in the digital workplace. During this study, they are adhering to ethical standards, such as the researcher getting consent from the participants. Lastly, determinism is another principle that relates. In this case, it is, why are the employees and employers making these poor decisions? Such as not employers not giving adequate training or the employees not being more aware of the decisions they’re making and how it is affecting them and their company. Cyber Security has become a top priority for businesses, cyber security challenges among employees in the digital workplace have become a critical issue because a digital workplace has become the norm.
They conducted a multistage procedure. The first step was identifying participants from various digital working firms in Saudi Arabia. For step two the participants were contacted and informed consent was obtained. Next, they conducted semi-structured interviews in person or online. In step four, interviews were transcribed and subjected to thematic analysis. Lastly, the data was gathered from twenty respondents.
During the interviews, the feedback they got was the lack of awareness and training, indicating inadequate cyber hygiene training. This leads to employees engaging in hazardous behavior that could jeopardize an organization’s security. Using weak passwords that are easily guessable, these practices make it easier for attackers to reach sensitive information or systems. Lastly, Bring Your Device (BYD) allows employees to use their devices for work purposes. Doing this has the potential for devices to be lost, stolen, or attacked from insecure networks or wifi.
I saw many concepts from class in this article that I saw in the article. First is the interviews. Interviewing is another type of research method we touched on in class. Human factors are another concept from class that was mentioned in the article. Human factors are the human influence on cyber security, in the article the human factors are the things the humans are doing and how that affects the digital workplace. Denial of injury is how I think these employees and employers must be thinking, they are not aware and the employers don’t care enough so they must think it is not that big of a deal. Another way I think they think is optimism bias, optimism bias is thinking that nothing bad will ever happen to them because it hasn’t happened before. Having this mindset will make you more trusting and gullible. Lastly, there is the Weiderhold mindset. This is the thinking that professionals should think like criminals. Having this mindset makes you more sharp and makes you more conscious of cyber threats.
The societal impact this article has is not just on the Saudi Arabian digital workplace but on digital workplaces across the globe. With these interviews they can use the answer to do better moving forward while doing better this also creates a safer digital workplace for the rest of the world. https://cybercrimejournal.com/menuscript/index.php/cybercrimejournal/article/view/133/49
