Handsome Biscuit
Handsome Biscuit is a tiny breakfast and lunch restaurant serving a variety of sweet potato biscuit sandwiches, sides, and desserts. Located in a suitably fitting neighborhood, Handsome Biscuit can be discovered on 4200 Monarch Way, Norfolk, VA. On the outside of the building its logo, Handsome Biscuit, is positioned on the base of the brick property. I visited Handsome Biscuit with a group of my classmates from English class on November 8. The scenery was quite well, and I was hoping the food was to. Considering that I ordered a B.E.C, which consisted of a sweet potato biscuit, thick cut bacon, egg, and cheese; taking into account that I do not admire sweet potato at all.
Handsome Biscuit is a casual sit down cafe. The building is quite small on the inside compared to your average massive IHOP located down the street from your house. The inside of the property consists of a couple of dining chairs and tables and a table bar at the front of the entrance for anybody who wants to catch some sunshine while eating their biscuit. The small sized restaurant isn’t expensive at all, the highest priced item is the Hella Fitzgerald, which consists of fried chicken with bacon, cheddar, and red eye sausage gravy and is priced at $7.25 while the lowest priced item is a PB&JB, consisting of peanut butter, mixed berry jam, and salted butter, priced at $3.50.
Immediately, as I walked into the building a gigantic whiff of salty, crispy bacon got a hold of my nose. As I looked straight ahead, I could see the open space of the clean and organized kitchen. Behind the glass of the kitchen, the cook could be seen making the handmade dough of the sweet potato biscuits, being rolled in the flour and cut into the circle shape of a biscuit. To the left of the entrance, there is a large colorful menu written in different colors of chalk. While looking at the chalkboard menu, I didn’t see a wide variety of different kinds of biscuits other than sweet potato. Although it was a pleasant size restaurant and the staff was friendly and convenient, I thought that it would be like the size of IHOP and that I would get served and have a waitress like IHOP. While the staff was fitting well with my personal needs, the employee at the register could have increased his volume while communicating with me. As I was sitting in the dining area, at the back of the restaurant, waiting for my food, I noticed that the ceiling was undone, meaning there were no ceiling tiles showcasing all of the running pipes. My mom says that that is the new style now in this modern time, but I would have to disagree. Another problem that I ran into while at Handsome Biscuit, was the area that I was sitting at had a sticky floor. Despite the ceiling being undone in my opinion and the sticky floor, the bathrooms were extraordinary entertaining. The first bathroom was showcased with a green wallpaper and had strobe lights making the bathroom a club scene, while the second bathroom was all pink. The music being played softly called for engaging conversations with others. Although there was some sticky situations and unfinished business, the ambiance of the restaurant was quite delightful.
To start, I decided to order the B.E.C, including thick cut bacon, egg, and cheese for $4.70. What I first noticed when I got my B.E.C was a lot of cheese, I thought that it would be too much, but it wasn’t. The biscuit was standing tall and fluffy on the plate with pieces of bacon poking out on the side of the sweet potato biscuit. When I first touched the biscuit, it felt like a soft blanket with ridges on the outside with a soft fluffy coating on the inside. As I took a whiff of my biscuit, I could smell the crispy salt from the bacon. Unlike pork bacon, the delicate bacon on the biscuit wasn’t greasy at all. While I examined the bacon, I didn’t see any fat on it, which is usually on other types of bacon, which gave the B.E.C a ultimate plus. The music played softly in the background while everyone’s silverware was clanking against their plates. As soon as I bit into the B.E.C, I tasted the egg and the salt from the egg. The biscuit was surprisingly exceptionally acceptable. The sweet potato biscuit didn’t taste like sweet potato at all, like I expected it to. In fact the sweet potato biscuit tasted like a Pillsbury biscuit. The bacon was crispy; it had a delightful crunch, and I could taste the saltiness in every bite. The egg tasted unusual to me. The yolk wasn’t cooked all the way through how I expected it to be. The cheese was extremely sharp and enjoyable combining well with everything. Overall, the B.E.C was an extraordinary biscuit, with a lot of strong combined ingredients.
Overall, Handsome Biscuit was a small restaurant with mouth watering exceptional breakfast and lunch meals. Although I enjoyed the restaurant, I would not seek anything like this again. I would go back for their food, but I would not sit and dine in. If I were to experience this again by myself or with a family member, it would have to be a quick grab and go event while I’m on the run. Despite the fact that I wouldn’t make this restaurant my first choice, it still had some qualifying elements; such as crispy bacon, a salted egg, and a sweet potato biscuit that didn’t taste like sweet potato at all, making the biscuit remarkably better than expected.
