Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs has five different levels of needs. The first level is physiological needs. This includes basic needs like food, water, warmth, and rest. In today’s society, technology has become a basic need instead of a luxury. Without it, humans cannot get tasks done for work or use it to care for their needs. The second level is safety needs. This includes security and safety. In a way, technology does provide a sense of security for humans. Without it, they feel vulnerable. Having access to a device and the Internet has become a basic thing for humans. Additionally, humans use technology in order to store their private and personal information. However, technology is able to be compromised and breached. This, in turn, can lead to a person’s information being exposed to the public. The third level is belongingness and love needs. This includes intimate relationships and having friends. Technology allows humans to stay connected to friends and relatives that live far away. Through the use of social media and teleconferencing apps, humans are able to connect and socialize with those that they love and care for. The fourth level is esteem needs. This includes prestige and feelings of accomplishment. Most people enjoy talking about themselves or about their accomplishments on social media. They’ll post about any type of accomplishment. It can be about getting a new job, traveling to a new place, or even getting a new car. Humans do this to build up their self-esteem and to feel proud about themselves. Humans do talk about their accomplishments to others directly, but using technology helps them to share their accomplishments with more people. The fifth level is self-actualization. This involves achieving one’s full potential and it includes creative activities. According to Maslow, all individuals strive for self-actualization, but very few are able to find it and meet that need. There are a lot of people out there on the Internet that speak about finding a passion and using that to discover themselves. With the Internet, there is a wealth of content and information that is able to help us as humans to discover who we are and what we are interested in. We just have to be willing to dig deep enough to discover it.
