An article written by Andriy Slynchuk explained eleven things that users unknowingly do on the Internet. The Internet is something that is used commonly in our lives. However, there are many activities and things that we can do unknowingly on the Internet that are against the law. These include using unofficial streaming services, using torrent services, using copyrighted images, sharing passwords, addresses, or photos of others, bullying/trolling, recording a voice (VoIP) call without consent, faking your identity online, using other people’s Internet networks, collecting information about children/minors, extracting audio from YouTube, and making illegal Internet searches. In this journal entry, I am going to talk about, what I believe, are the five most serious violations and why I considered them. The first violation that I chose to be the most serious is faking your identity online. I considered this to be the most serious because faking your identity when buying a product, accessing unauthorized resources, or stealing someone else’s credentials is serious. It isn’t just harmless fun. You are not just breaking the law. You are breaking the trust of others and tarnishing your reputation. You are using a fake identity to do harmful things. That alone is all that needs to be said about how serious using a fake identity is. The second most serious violation that I chose is bullying and trolling. Bullying is never okay. The same can be said about bullying that takes place over the Internet which is also known as cyberbullying. Victims of cyberbullying develop negative mental and psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, self-harming behavior, thoughts of suicide, alcohol and drug use and dependence, aggression, and involvement in violence or crime. The person that cyberbullies another person can harm them both physically and psychologically. The third most serious violation that I chose is collecting information about children or minors. There are a lot of dangerous people out there that collect information about other people in order to harm them. Sadly, many children have fallen victim to sexual predators out there just from information that was collected about them. Most children do not have a proper understanding of what it means to be safe online. So, they may go to a website that is not safe and secure. This will ultimately lead to them having their information stolen from them and being taken advantage of by some stranger on the Internet. The fourth most serious violation is making illegal searches on the Internet. This one is pretty self-explanatory. Anytime someone looks up information about illegal drug distributions/pickups, terrorism-related terms, or child pornography, then that person is looking up illegal content that could potentially get him/her arrested. The fifth most serious violation is using unofficial streaming services. Streaming services require you to pay a subscription in order to access their content. There are many illegal streaming services out there that people use to get access to content without paying for it. There have been many instances that involved people unknowingly using these services to watch content, but there have also been instances of people using these services with full knowledge that they were illegal. There was a case in Nevada where two people were each sentenced to ten years in prison for using illegal streaming services. So, using illegal streaming services is definitely a serious Internet violation.
