Digital forensics is defined as the process of uncovering and interpreting electronic data. The overall goal of the process is to preserve any and all evidence in its most original form while performing a structured investigation by collecting, identifying, and validating the digital information to reconstruct events that occurred in the past. The career field of digital forensics is considered to be a subset of the cybersecurity realm. The speaker, Davin Teo, is a digital forensics investigator and he stated that he got into the field initially by starting as an IT professional for a small accounting firm that needed someone that could help in managing their network. In his talk, he stated that he initially had the goal of entering into the career field of accounting. As he gained more experience and skills in different technical roles, he eventually was able to get into the digital forensics space of cybersecurity. The job responsibilities of digital forensics investigators include things such as conducting investigations, identifying system vulnerabilities, gathering and maintaining evidence, writing and reviewing investigative reports, and using forensic software tools during investigations. In many ways, the digital forensics career field relates to the social sciences. Investigators must have an understanding of human behavior and tendencies as to why certain crimes are committed. Additionally, they have to use certain social science principles in communicating their findings to others. The social science principle of parsimony is used by these professionals very often. They have to explain their findings in a way that is easy to understand and not overly complicated. They also have to work alongside other professionals in a collaborative manner to effectively accomplish tasks and discover critical findings. Digital forensics investigators play a key role in the cybersecurity domain and are extremely relevant to the world of social science.
