Journal Entry #5

The seven individual motives for cybercrime are entertainment, political, revenge, boredom, recognition, money, and multiple reasons. In my opinion, money is the number one reason, and it makes the most sense. Most people commit cybercrime because of financial gain. A cybercriminal may steal sensitive and confidential information and hold until a ransom is paid. Another scenario would be where a cybercriminal uses that stolen information to be sold on the black market. The second reason would be entertainment. Cybercriminals perform attacks on people and/or companies just to enjoy their reaction from it. They’ll just do it for fun. The third reason is recognition. Cybercriminals will conceal their names and use an alias, but they will commit a cybercrime for recognition from the media. It gives them a sense of publicity and it makes them feel like a celebrity even though they did something illegal. The fourth reason is political. Many cybercriminals, known as hacktivists, commit cybercrime as part of civil disobedience. They may commit cybercrimes for social change as well. Any type of political agenda will serve as the primary motivation for committing an act of cybercrime. The fifth reason is revenge. There are many instances of where cybercriminals hack to get revenge on someone. They may have a former acquaintance, spouse, or employer that they fell out with and now want to get back at them. This is misguided, but they act on their emotional feelings instead of using logical thinking. The sixth reason is boredom. Cybercriminals like challenges and they are always looking for ways to sharpen their skills and knowledge. There are times where they will hack just for fun and just to get out of feeling bored. The seventh and last reason is multiple reasons. Cybercriminals are all different from one another, so they will each have their own motives and agendas for carrying out their acts of crime. It’s important to note that these motives can shift and adjust over the course of time.
