After reflecting on the organization’s goals and mission, have your values, opinions, and/or beliefs about the importance of health changed or grown? Be specific.
After reflecting on Baby Box’s goals and mission, my values towards the problem of parents not being able to care for their children, abandoned children, and society’s views on certain reasons of birth have grown. In communities, there should be more organizations out there to specifically help parents who want to keep their children, but unfortunately can’t afford it. So many more children would be able to be with their biological parents if it weren’t for that reason alone. Also, society’s views on teenage pregnancy and unmarried parents should be changed along with the times. These things happen and the only reason why babies are given up is because their parents fear the social stigma they would face.
Thinking about the community partner:
How do these services relate to your intended career field?
My intended career field is to become a nurse. This relates to it because of the way that the mothers must deliver babies in private instead of at the hospital because Korea doesn’t allow anonymous pregnancy. If they aren’t in the hospital, then they can face major health complications that neither the doctors nor the nurses could help with and that is concerning for the mother and the baby. With the Baby Box, the mothers have somewhere to bring their newborn babies to so that the people there can bring the infants to a healthcare professional, like a nurse, to be checked out.
What Degree Program (other than your current major) could it relate to?
It could relate to social services.
Would you choose to pursue that major as your parallel major?
I would choose to pursue that field.
Why?
I would choose to pursue social service because, just like nursing, it helps people. With social services, I could help families stay together, or bring a child out of harm’s way.
