You must include the assignment submitted in HLTH 101 regarding your Learning Style Self Assessment
Step 1: EVALUATE YOUR STUDY HABITS
Describe your current methods of study. How do you study for each class?
The study techniques I usually use is repetition of the information given to me I look over the information and repeat it to myself until I memorize it.
What specific techniques do you use in class?
I usually take notes while I’m in class.
What specific techniques do you use outside of class?
I use repetition outside of class.
Identify one class in which you are doing well (not HLTH 101). What study methods work best and why?
I am doing well in sociology. The study methods I use for sociology are taking notes in class so that I can know the material. Then after class, I use repetition to learn the material.
Step 2: IDENTIFY AND APPLY NEW LEARNING TECHNIQUES
A class I am experiencing trouble in is my introduction to the visual arts class. The strategies I plan to use from now on are looking at the reviews my teacher gives and evaluating the text figures. I do not plan to increase my study time for this class by much, but I do plan on raising it by 15 minutes so that my total time comes closely to an hour and a half. I should and will spend more time studying the techniques used in paintings and other forms of art.
I would say that I am systematic in my studying the material for my exam. When I plan to study, I usually stick to that plan. In terms of using the learning supports available to me, I would say that I don’t use them very often. I usually study from notes I took and turn out fine. I also struggle with being motivated to study because I do find it boring and I don’t like to do boring things, but I also have a strange amount of will power so it balances out when I remember I don’t want to waste my college money. The thing I am always confused on in my classes seems to be how to put answers in on online homework, so I don’t get them wrong. For example, in intro to the visual arts I must put in what the art style for a piece is, but most pieces are mixed with styles, so I don’t know which one to put. I usually just submit an answer and if it’s wrong, I put in my second guess on the second attempt and get it right.
What I usually do before an exam is study while I play some music softly in the background. For me, I know I’m absorbing the information well when I can’t really hear the music and I just hear the thoughts in my head. I know it sounds weird. I don’t like quiet, peaceful environments, so the music does act as a relaxer for me, but it also acts a sign of sorts to indicated I’m doing well. Yet, even when I can hear the music and its lyrics, I’m usually able to link them to the information I’m studying when I’m taking a test. What doesn’t work for me is studying with other people. I am a social person, so my first instinct when I’m around people is to socialize, not be quiet and study. I don’t usually study with people, but I’ll try to continue to do that.
When I get answers wrong, they’re usually on what the artist is trying to convey in a piece of art. There are a lot of interpretations to one piece of art and there are multiple answers to the question of what the artist is trying to convey, so to answer the questions like that, I pretty much have to answer it from my teacher’s perspective, and I have never met them. The answer I chose versus the one that is correct are almost always close to each other.
Review at least 5 academic tips/resources listed here: https://www.odu.edu/success/academic/tips What is one new technique you could try in class to help you better understand the material?
One new technique I would like to use in class is the reading strategy. It’s under the study effectively tab in the more academic strategies unit on the page provided.
What is one new technique you could try outside of class to help you better understand the material?
A technique I could try outside of class is the study cycle. That is under the same tab as the last strategy.
