Pre-Semester Reflection

Major/Career

What is your intended major and why did you choose this major?

My intended major is Nursing and I chose this because I like to help people and, along with many of my family members, I decided to make helping people my career. I like to think you should enjoy your job.

What skills or abilities do you possess that make this major/career a good choice for you?

I like to believe I have excellent people skills, I’m good under pressure, and I like to put in hard work in the things I love.

What experience, if any, do you have that relates to your chosen major/career?

Truthfully, I don’t have much experience that would relate to nursing other than providing minimal first aid to minuscule wounds, but I do have many relatives in nursing and I love to listen to their experiences.

In what type of setting would you prefer to work?

I would like to work in places that no one usually likes to work, like in undeveloped countries that need help, or maybe the E.R..

What are your career goals (in 5 years/in 10 years)?

I would hope that in 5 years I would be working in a hospital as a nurse or a resident.

Complete the MyMajors quiz: https://odu.mymajors.com/quiz/. Provide a screenshot of your results. Of the majors on your top 10 list, which 3 would you like to learn more about?

I would like to learn more about Graphic Design, Cinema Production, and Photography and Print Media

Transition to college

What do you expect to be the biggest difference between high school and college?

I expect the responsibility of learning to be way more dependent on my decisions in college compared to high school.

What do you expect to be your biggest challenge this semester?

My biggest challenge may be adjusting to college life, familiarizing myself with all of ODU’s resources, etc.

If you commute to class: What do you expect to be your biggest challenge with commuting to campus?

My biggest challenge would be traffic and finding parking.

Do you have a job/ or plan to get a job? If so, where? How many hours will you be working per week?

I don’t plan to get a job during college.

Study habits

Is there a difference between “studying” and “homework”?  Explain your answer.

Homework is just something that’s assigned that you must turn in to keep your grades up, while studying isn’t assigned and more optional but very detrimental to how well you do in the class.

How much time do you plan to spend studying for each class every week?

During high school it was about an hour or 2 a week.

For which class do you expect to spend the most time studying?

I expect to study more for Introduction to Chemistry.

For which class (other than HLTH 101) are you expecting to spend the least amount of time studying?

I don’t think I would need to study as much for Introduction to Visual Arts.

Where do you plan to study?

I usually study in my room.

What potential distractions can you anticipate?

My dogs like to walk on my laptop if I don’t give them attention when they want it so that would be my biggest distraction most likely.

How do you plan to avoid these distractions?

I could lock my dogs out of my room.

What time of day is your best time to study and why?

I like to study in the afternoon or night. This is the time I feel my mind is most aware and ready.

This Fall, you are in online courses, some of which do not meet at a specific time, how do you plan to manage all of your assignments?

I have a planner that I write in to keep track of things.

Think about all of your commitments i.e. job, family, social life (from a distance and wear your mask! #ReignResponsibly). How do you plan on balancing your various commitments?

I won’t let my schoolwork completely take over my life, but I will keep it a top priority.

Learning style

What specific study techniques do you think work best for you?

I can learn from any study technique, but I like to learn through notes.

Do you use different study techniques for different classes?  Provide examples.

I don’t use different techniques.

In high school, what clubs, organizations, or activities did you participate in, if any?

In high school I was in Chorus, Asian Culture Club, Badminton Club, Project Green Teens, and Japanese National Honors Society.

Is there a club or organization you plan to join this semester and what do you expect to gain from this experience?  If not, why not?

I would like to join Asian American groups.
