SCADA (which stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems are industrial control systems that manage facilities and day-to-day industrial processes. Because critical infrastructure systems are incredibly important to modern society, SCADA systems help protect them from attacks as well as human error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-medium-font-size\"><strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">SCADA Systems<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>          SCADA systems control many infrastructure that people use or draw from every day, such as power grids, nuclear plants, water treatment facilities, transportation networks, telecommunication networks, oil pipelines, and so much more. SCADA centralizes around three main subsystems. Human-machine interfaces, or HMIs, are the hardware that make processes easy for humans to understand, and allow humans to operate and manage processes. Remote terminal units, or RTUs, \u201cconverts all electrical signals coming from equipment into digital values like the status- open\/closed \u2013 from a valve or switch or the measurements like flow, pressure, current, or voltage\u201d (<em>SCADA Systems<\/em>). These digital values can control systems like power switches or valves. Lastly, programmable logic controllers, or PLCs, are computers that hold automated processes such as assembly lines, amusement rides, and the like that have multiple steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong><strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Vulnerabilities in Critical Infrastructure Systems<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>          There are many risks that could pose a threat to critical infrastructure. For one, physical risks such as power outages could cause significant damage. Similarly, damage to equipment due to natural causes such as storms or just aging can halt processes. Even human error or negligence can lead to these same catastrophic outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-medium-font-size\"><strong><strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Mitigation with SCADA<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>          SCADA systems have the capability of protecting critical infrastructure from many dangers. For one, SCADA systems can collect real-time data to identify potential wear to certain parts of machinery or equipment and conduct diagnostics for anomalies. Remote monitoring allows people to check infrastructure if the site is inaccessible, and automated processes can take away human-reliance and minimize human error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-medium-font-size\"><strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Conclusion<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>          SCADA systems are very important to the world because they control critical infrastructure, reducing risks from equipment failure, lessening human error, and can run checks and diagnostics on itself.
