As mentioned previously, I am a minister. I am a minister at a church with many difficult cultures and backgrounds that we love to celebrate. Normally, we celebrate African American Heritage Month in February but in November we also celebrate what we like to call “International Heritage Month/Sunday. On the 4th Sunday of every November, we pick a difficult from our congregation and celebrate their history, music, the way the worship, clothing, and their food. It’s a way to see first hand how each culture use their history, music, food cultivate who they are this very day.
We have celebrated African culture through song and dances, Filipino culture through the history of the people, its food and decorations, Irish culture through dancing, Native American through their history globally and locally and Spanish culture through dancing, food and clothing. Celebrating a different culture helps to include everyone in the service and gives the congregation knowledge to use outside the four walls of building. This celebration is not just about the dancing and food, it is truly about how no matter what culture you are from, we can all worship God together but at the same time learn from each other to better understand our differences, what is sacred to each culture and how we are all people how can work together in love.
Below is a link to Irish dance the dance group at my church performed. (Disclaimer: We taught ourselves the Irish moves so they might not be perfect..lol)
