I had a difficult time figuring out how to use the textbook properly, but I did eventually figure out what I needed to do help me pass my class. In my class my teacher gave us plenty of opportunities to express our strengths (and weaknesses) through different assignments. We had speaking assignments where we had to video record ourselves completing a pre-recorded conversation with our instructor as well as respond to our peers video submissions. We had discussion posts talking about different social situations and differences between colleges here and abroad in other Spanish speaking countries. In some discussion posts we had to respond in Spanish. We also had to do live zoom meetings where she would ask us questions in Spanish and we would have to respond to those questions in Spanish. Having the different modes of learning really helped the information stick and make it better for me to understand phrases. I also used outside materials like Duolingo to help me retain information I was learning in the classroom. The biggest reason I wanted to learn how to communicate in Spanish is because as a nurse or even as someone with a Sociology major (like myself); I will find myself in situations where I will need to be able to communicate with people that speak another language other than English. Having this skill set will allow me to be able to communicate more effectively with people from other cultures so that I can help these people better. I will also use this skill set when traveling and exploring other cultures outside of the United States.

Artifacts

It’s hard for me to choose ONE favorite person. See these 4 people are all my favorite people. Mi familia son mis personas favoritas. Ellos son divertidos, inteligentes, y muy activos. Amo a mi familia mucho. Mi familia es muy agradable. (This is a sample of text from discussion post 5 discussing people I admire and who my favorite people are. Here I had a picture of my family and discuss my family).

Here is another example of a discussion board post where I learned about the different celebrations of each of month of the year in Spain.

After watching the vide 12 mesas 12 fiestas en España, I found the month Junio, La Noche de San Juan. This fiesta, the celebrate on June 23, St. Johns eve, is celebrated on beaches throughout the country to bring in the summer! According to the article “pinandtravel”, “the bonfires on the beaches are to purify, protect, and ward off evil spirits.” I would say compared to the United States, the celebrations seem to be similar for the most part, look at Independence Day here compared to most of their celebrations they celebrate in the streets and beaches just as we do when we can.

Mi fiesta favorita es el 25 de Diciembre. Es el dia de Navidad.

Here is a discussion board post where we were to look at the similarities between our university ODU and the University of Granada.

Watching the video on the University of Granada , I am actually really intrigued by the offerings at the university and how modernized they are to be one of the oldest universities in Spain. Especially with the transportation options. It is kind of like its geared for student’s that study abroad. Here at ODU main campus, there is a similar transportation in place, there is a rail system here and public transportation ran by the city. Similarities between the two universities is the diversity of extra curricular offerings like sports and clubs.

I have never officially studied abroad but being in the military and being deployed to different parts of the world, I did experience different cultures and learned different things about those cultures that way. I would definitely be open to studying abroad if the circumstances were right to do so. I think experiencing different parts of the world and other cultures is key to empathy and understanding and it helps create and foster an open mind.

Here are some videos of me in a flipgrid discussion speaking Spanish.

https://flip.com/groups/14180126/topics/35768689/responses/418223743/comments

https://flip.com/groups/14180126/topics/35768720/responses/420178462/comments

https://canvas.odu.edu/courses/137444/discussion_topics/541332?module_item_id=4210486

This semester, I was taking Spanish 101.
