The media has a big impact on how we see cybersecurity, often swinging between
realistic and exaggerated portrayals. One moment, we might see a serious report about a major
data breach affecting millions, making viewers anxious and more aware of real risks. The next,
we’re bombarded with dramatic headlines about hackers lurking in the shadows or cyber
apocalypse doomsday scenarios, creating unnecessary panic. News segments might show frantic
experts warning about an impending digital disaster, while other reports offer practical tips for
protecting personal data. This mix of intense fear and helpful advice can confuse the public,
highlighting the need for clear and accurate information amidst all the drama. It also portrays the
scenes due to convenience for the plot, the plot and story telling is what’s more important in
media and what keeps the audience engaged. However, this need for engagement confuses the
knowledge and skills needed to perform certain acts for individuals with “ special skills” which
is unrealistic. As entertaining as it is, the lessons to learn from cybersecurity stem all over the
place.
