When looking at individual motives for cybercrimes: Entertainment, Political, Revenge, Boredom, Recognition, Money, and Multiple Reasons, some motives make more sense than others. Starting with number 7, Boredom: Although boredom is a motive for cybercrime, it doesn’t seem as significant as the other motives because there is more to gain from cybercrime than fixing boredom. Number 6, Recognition: The desire to be recognized by those around you is valid. People may launch cyberattacks and demonstrate their talents to get notoriety for their expertise. However, with the severity of cybercrime, recognition doesn’t come to mind when a criminal wants to gain something. Number 5, Multiple reasons: this may be the most accurate motive because, in reality, several motives can drive someone to commit cybercrimes. Nevertheless, multiple reasons rank lower in ranking motives and identifying top motives because finding someone’s true motives is harder. Number 4, Revenge: When considering human behavior, revenge is a genuine and dark side of behavior that causes people to take action. Cybercrimes driven by revenge cause more damage because of a personal vendetta, a target, and a desire to hurt. I couldn’t say that about the lower-ranking motives. Number 3, Entertainment: This motive tends to relate to boredom. Although I ranked boredom the lowest, entertainment makes sense to me as a motive when I look at the demographics of hackers. Hackers are predominantly younger males. As a younger adult male, I know young male behavior; it is very natural for hackers to commit cybercrimes for a test of skill or amusement. Number 2, Political: I believe politically motivated cybercrimes have been very common from the beginning of information warfare to today. Cybercrimes are done for activism, and some target foreign nations, all driven by one’s political views. Finally, 1, Money: Financial gain is one of the most common motives of cybercrimes today. People can be greedy and lazy, scamming money out of people who are unaware. Ransomware, identity theft, and more are all cybercriminals’ attacks to gain money.
