Blog Entry #10

Since the initial blog post, a few opinions that I have had about this course has changed. I have found more valuable concepts that I can apply to the business endeavors that I am pursuing. One example of this is the measurability of emotional intelligence. Looking through an entrepreneur’s perspective, one of the many factors in determining whether or not a business will succeed is establishing a unifying culture within the workplace. One of the methods used by many companies to help build, recruit and manufacture this atmosphere is emotional intelligence tests. They can help bring like-minded people into the workplace while expanding the desired culture. I feel that I have exceeded well within this course as I have been able to maintain an A all semester and meet all the course objectives. I didn’t miss any assignments and have studied rigorously throughout the semester, and so far, the hard work has paid off, so I wouldn’t necessarily change anything. In terms of my attitude towards social psychology, I would say it needs more funding if it wants to promote more social research and become a larger field of study, and in the coming years, I anticipate that to be the case.

The first thing that I feel has brought me some value from this course is understanding heuristics and, more specifically, availability heuristics. The second most valuable thing that I have learned from social psychology is the concept of cognitive dissonance. Lastly, the final idea that I enjoyed learning about was the concepts of self-regulation and emotional intelligence, as we saw in Blog entry #7. Self-regulation correlated with another course I took, Organizational psychology. Similarly, in that class, the concept of Emotional intelligence was relevant; we also discussed the statistical data pertaining to how many individuals are estimated to have high and low emotional intelligence.

This article discusses the concept of sexual conflict within heterosexual relationships. The beginning of the report refers to the concept known as the mating battleground. In layman’s terms, it is the conflicts that arise within the arena of dating and marriage. The article details three stages of importance. Prior to consummation, After a relationship has formed and after a breakup. Each of these stages entails several factors as to why Men and Women in heterosexual relationships have conflict. One primary reason is fear of infidelity, derived from the after the relationship has formed stage. Another reason is the evident behavior of lying or fibbing to achieve sexual relations with the other person; this perspective is seen in the prior to consummation stage. Another behavior seen in the After a Breakup stage is stalking; stalking is done more frequently by men; however, it is done by women as well. These behaviors contribute to the upsetting of both sides of the heterosexual relationship and lead to sexual conflict.

The relationship between Self-regulation and Emotional Intelligence is interconnected, as stated in the video. Ph.D. Linda Ferguson describes that our emotions are generated from within us. Emotions that come about can then be regulated by us, as long as we are self-aware of them, which essentially starts the self-regulation process. Emotional Intelligence, in my opinion, is the ability to read people effectively, analyze their behavior, sort between useful and non-useful tendencies, and then try to implement them in your own life to self-improve. A way to improve Emotional Intelligence would be to be more present in situations and pay close attention to people’s small details and intricacies.

Jean Kilbourne’s Ted Talk The Dangerous Ways Ads See Women discusses the ways women and girls have been sexualized through advertisements, graphic images, and pornography throughout the years. Since I was a child, it has been evident that women have been overly sexualized throughout the years. However, as was said in the video, things are getting better and progressing. For example, Jean Kilbourne’s Ted Talk was given in 2014, and since then, a lot has changed, especially in media, marketing, and other areas. One example is the Porn Industry, which is currently challenged with subscription-based services like Only Fans. Only Fans have allowed previous members of the porn industry to take absolute control over their content and have complete control about how they want to depict themselves. Previously they may have been required to do specific actions or scenes that represent themselves in a way that they might not have wanted. This is just one example we have seen, and I do not doubt that other ideas like this which promote individual sovereignty will overtake those that won’t.

This ad is taken from thetruth.com which is a site that tries to show the dangers of smoking nicotine from vaporizers. They are a non-profit focused on trying to educate the dangers of smoking from these products including depression and anxiety. This would be considered a credible ad, as decades of scientific research have shown the addiction-related illnesses and syndromes generated from cigarettes, tobacco, and other nicotine applications or apparatuses.

This ad is an example of a not credible ad. Unfortunately, the tobacco industry in the early 1900s had bought out several doctors within the United States and paid them to back the promotion of cigarettes. These ads were targeted to users of tobacco and used an appeal to authority visa-ve the doctors within these ads. However years of research since these ads were produced have indicated that cigarettes are one of the leading causes of cancer within the world.

This ad would be considered an attractive source because it uses celebrity appeal as renowned actor Matt Damon is in it. It is also attractive in the sense that the likelihood of the US dollar going to zero is increasing every year and the dramatic increase in inflation in tandem with around 40% of the US Dollars circulating being printed within the last twelve months. Cryptocurrencies are solutions that try to combat these economic issues and are tremendously increasing in popularity, and most likely will be the currency of the future.

To prepare for the first test we took, I looked over my lecture notes, read all the chapters at least once, and reread the chapters that contained some of the more complex concepts. I then looked over the review sheet and conceptualized how the review would correlate to the test. Then, I went back into the chapters and pulled the necessary information corresponding with the review. These methods were able to help me achieve a 96 on the test, and I believe that this is a good framework as we advance into the future.

After reading the Soul Meets Body article, I was surprised to learn how much music affects some people’s potential qualifications of future romantic relationships and the prediction of feeling and love associated with the analysis. I don’t necessarily have a specific preference for what kind of music I listen to, and it mostly depends on the mood and circumstance in which I find myself. For example, I may listen to something that invokes a sense of excitement or, from a biological standpoint, adrenaline when I lift weights like rock or heavy metal. When I am in a more lackadaisical mood, I may listen to something that invokes a sense of calmness or tranquility, like classical music. I haven’t noticed a severe discrepancy between our musical selection in terms of romantic partners. However, I may also state that I do enjoy many different music genres and don’t have a particular choice or selection that I adhere to. Since I am currently single and do not have a romantic partner, I cannot answer that question, but my close friends and I have similar music.

Visual represantation:

Mother: Salt and Pepper “push it” when I was a child; she told me her friends, and she had won a lip-syncing contest to that song.

Brother: The song that comes to mind is “Purple Haze” by the heavily renowned Jimmy Hendrix, as my brother is heavily influenced by early rock and roll.

Jack, Close friend/roommate: Brent Fiayaz’s song poison comes into mind as this song is on repeat when we are both carpooling to school.

Taz roommate: Gunna’s Drip or Drown comes into mind as when we lift weights, this is one of the many songs we have playing.

Myself: The song that I would attribute to myself would be The Outsider by shooter Jennings because the song maintains its ideals even though it is some years later, and times are changing more rapidly than ever.

Dominique, former Roommate: I attribute Gospel music to him as he was deeply religious. There were several discussions where I asked why you believe what you believe, and most Sunday mornings, he would play this kind of music.

Categorizing oneself accurately and coherently is one of the most challenging things a person can do. Nevertheless, I would describe my learning style as an audio/visual learner, emphasizing solitary and intrapersonal learning styles. My view on education and learning may differ from most people’s. I have never considered myself an exemplary student; however, I enjoy learning and acquiring various skills a great deal. I would categorize my current confidence level as a student to be higher than it has ever been before. I believe there are some areas where I could improve, such as my writing abilities and perhaps public speaking. The obstacles that I face are due typically to my introverted nature, and I usually tend not to speak my mind unless necessary. These skills are what I believe are the most important for me to focus on right now, with the possible addition of getting better at describing complex ideas more understandably. Over the last few semesters, I have become more organized as a student, as can be in my GPA performance. Other skills that I have honed outside of the educational realm include staying on a strict workout and dieting regimen learning about financial systems and markets. Also, allocating a decent portion of my time reading and maintaining a proper schedule has contributed to my overall happiness. The results of my self-efficacy resulted in a mean score of 3.5 or 35. In describing how they correlate to my task accomplishments, I feel that I am on the right track. However, learning is something that I think never ends for anyone. I quantify success as how often and how much you can learn about various subjects and apply them to your everyday life to fuel your financial and intellectual growth.

Course Expectations:

Since I am not a psychology major, I don’t think that I will personally gain that much insight from this course due to the nature of my endeavors being more financially based. However, as time passes, perhaps my opinion will change in this regard. The few circumstances that may help me better understand how people think/take in information and react to external/societal stimuli about the financial markets; these areas of knowledge are somewhat helpful. In terms of strategy, going over the material a few times a week, reading the chapters, and asking questions as needed seems to be the most efficient way to prepare and succeed in this course.

Meme Concept

One does not simply use common sense in social psychology – one does not simply. Make a Meme. (n.d.). Retrieved January 30, 2022, from https://makeameme.org/meme/one-does-not-a99a1e4840

This Meme Is supposed to represent how social psychology views “common sense” as stated in chapter 1.1: common sense is sometimes an inconsistent and unreliable guide to understanding social behavior.
