Purpose of the Assignment<\/strong>: <\/span>To provide the student an opportunity to integrate knowledge from the sciences, developmental theory, and physical assessment data to the care of a pediatric patient and family in the acute care setting.  The student will utilize critical thinking and independent judgments in presenting a holistic plan of care in a formal oral presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student Approach to the Assignment <\/span><\/strong>: For this assignment I was actually really excited to present on this case because my day shadowing in the OR was my most favorite day of my pediatric clinical rotation. I thought that the NUSS procedure, which CHKD is known for, and I got to witness, was intriguing and exciting to watch. So, for this assignment I was just really diving into what it would have been like to be the nurse responsible for a patient receiving this procedure and how I would best advocate for them in the OR as their nurse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reason for the Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio<\/strong>: <\/span>I included this assignment because I am interested in several realms of nursing, and only recently chose an area to focus on. I think that the best part of this career is how many different areas you can try and see what suits you best. I would love to spend a year as an operating room nurse and see if that would be a place I\u2019d enjoy nursing. This assignment reflects the type of clinical thinking I would have to do in that setting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Domain 5: Quality and Safety <\/strong> <\/span>
16. Identify sources and applications of national safety and quality standards and hospital standards of practice to guide nursing practice. (Domain 5) (5.1, 5.2)<\/span>
-In this presentation I discuss several safety and quality issues that demonstrate best practice and national safety and quality standards. For example preventing infection, preventing deep vein thrombosis, and preventing postoperative injuries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

17.      Articulate the nurse\u2019s role as a member of the interprofessional team in promoting safety and preventing errors and near misses. (Domains 5, 6) (5.1, 5.2,6.3, 6.4)<\/span>
-In exploration of the nursing problems that apply to this patient and determining the necessary interventions I identify the nursing role as a member of the interprofessional team and how we promote a safe environment and prevent errors by anticipating patient needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
