Rational choice is an economic theory that suggests that individuals/businesses make choices in their best interest. The letter relates to rational choice by alerting the customer to the intrusion. They could’ve never told the customer until the investigation was finalized. They alerted the customer to keep them aware of the situation so they could potentially protect themselves. This allows them to keep a good image and minimize the damages of the breach. They are doing what they believe is best for the company. Marxian economic theory suggests those with power exploit those without power. Marxian economic theory works since they could’ve told the customer right away when the breach happened but failed to do so. No where in the letter do they offer and sort of compensation for the companies issue. They referred the customer to the State of California’s website so they could do their own research instead of the company directly assisting them. They are brushing off the issue telling the individual to basically figure out the problem on their own and it is being investigated. They are exploiting the individual because they can’t do anything to them. Conflict theory is described as society can be understood through power differences and inequalities. Conflict theory relates to the article by explaining that the company has all of the power and information and is only giving the customer basic information. It seems as if the business doesn’t really care that the breach happened and is hanging the customer out to dry. They waited a long time to alert the customer after they failed to identify the breach right when it happened. They said that the attacker had a lot of their information including their address. The company has a huge power difference over the individual and is using this power to avoid the situation besides a basic letter. Symbolic theory suggests society can be understood through the interactions between individuals. They choose to alert the customer through a letter for a possible very serious situation. This shows the business isn’t really bothered this customer’s information got leaked. The letter basically sends the individual to the state for guidance instead of calling or visiting the customer to alert them of the issue personally. It shows the business isn’t really invested in the individual himself.

Umphlet, M., (2024).
