In taking this course I have had the opportunity to become a more global and universal college student and person. As I look back on my past blog posts, I can see my improvement throughout this course. For my final blog post, I will be returning to my first blog post, where I will revisit my expectations for the course and discuss my final thoughts about my overall progress.
Before taking this course, I had expectations for what I planned on learning and life lessons I planned on attaining. In Blog Post 1, I expressed how I wanted this course to broaden and globalize my perspective in psychology and everyday life. While I did not expect this course to change who I am, I hoped new knowledge would prompt me to think outside the box and consider topics and issues I hadn’t considered before taking this course. After almost fully completing the course, I am delighted to say that ALL of my expectations were met. This course has opened up so many doors for me, it is hard to count! Not only has this course invited me to think from a global perspective, but it also challenged me to do self-reflection, which is what I loved most about taking this course.
As I look back on my first blog post, I noticed that I set some goals and expectations for myself. I planned on being more established and on top of assignment due dates. The course syllabus required that I stay on top of blog posts, assignment takeaways, and module assignments. To get a high-grade grade in the course, it was crucial to follow instructions and not be late on homework. Looking back, I can say that I did an exceptional job at staying on top of personal expectations and requirements listed on the syllabus. This semester I turned all assignments in on time and missed all but 1 blog post. Amidst the pandemic and COVID-19 fatigue, I feel I did an amazing job staying on track and balancing this class with life outside of school. I think I did a beautiful job at staying organized and looking back I do not feel that I would change or do anything differently.
By taking this course, my attitude towards the study of psychology has changed quite a bit. This Cross-Cultural Psychology course has taught me about the flaws and strengths within the study of psychology. This course has invited me to consider global approaches and a culturally accommodating path to my studies. One unexpected perk that came with this course, which completely changed my attitude surrounding the course, was the amount of self-reflection it took to genuinely learn the material. While it was challenging to revisit past experiences and look deeper into various aspects of my life such as my upbringing and values, I appreciate it because it made me a more sympathetic and well-rounded student.
Another positive that came from this course was the way it pushed me academically. By requiring me to stay on top of the assignments and asking me to personally reflect on the material, I was able to absorb more information and take away more than I intended to this semester. One skill that this course has taught me, was how to be more sympathetic and open to new ideas. By asking me to look at psychology from different cultural lenses, I was required to humble myself and learn about the experiences of people who are different than me. This required patience and openness. These are skills I plan on taking with me through my educational career and life.
