America; a melting pot of cross cultural diversity.

This most recent assignment was a wake up call to me. It was a form of acceptance of where I was with comprehending cultural differences, but it was a push for me to strive to be different, and more aware of cultural diversity. Being a psychology major a lot of different components arise, for example in this course we stress diversity, in my women’s psychology class, the struggles of women come to light, and in I/O we discuss psychology in a more of a workplace environment. In each of those classes I found that I often downplay, or minimize the differences I see in the world. That instead of acknowledging the differences and finding ways that it can strengthen humanity, I downplay them to avoid conflict. The picture above really aligns with how I want to be in the future, I want to integrate. I want to mesh, and find better ways of life through the exploration of different cultures, to use the strengths of one culture to help the weaker parts of another, and to use the weakest of one, as a lesson to others. More than anything it opened me up to points of view. That my point of view, as wide as I may like to think it is, is not necessarily the best or the only way to go. The break down in differences really laid out the reality of how different people view diversity and how they handle it. The examples really, really, really brought it to light, as I found myself saying those very same quotes in my past. On a more positive note, it also helped me see that being a better person wasn’t as hard as I always thought it could be.
