{"id":132,"date":"2018-04-10T02:39:48","date_gmt":"2018-04-10T02:39:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/odublast2018\/?page_id=132"},"modified":"2019-03-13T20:30:04","modified_gmt":"2019-03-13T20:30:04","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/odublast2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Old Dominion University will host ODU BLAST (Building Leaders for Advancing Science and Technology), a summer and residential, hands-on intensive STEM-related program from for eighty rising 9<sup>th<\/sup> and 10th-grade\u00a0students and eight teacher-chaperones from across Virginia.\u00a0 Hands-on workshops and special STEM-related evening events are planned to enhance the on-campus ODU experience.\u00a0 ODU BLAST is funded by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium. Session in 2018 will be held during these dates: <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/odublast2019\/\">June 23-26, 2019 &#8211; ODU BLAST 2018<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/odublast2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8438\/2018\/06\/odu-blast-2018-group-photo-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1338 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/odublast2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8438\/2018\/06\/odu-blast-2018-group-photo-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/odublast2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8438\/2018\/06\/odu-blast-2018-group-photo-1.jpg 960w, https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/odublast2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8438\/2018\/06\/odu-blast-2018-group-photo-1-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/odublast2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8438\/2018\/06\/odu-blast-2018-group-photo-1-768x394.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/odublast2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8438\/2018\/06\/odu-blast-2018-group-photo-1-945x484.jpg 945w, https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/odublast2018\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8438\/2018\/06\/odu-blast-2018-group-photo-1-600x308.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction: <\/strong>Old Dominion University hosts one session of a program that is intended to build leaders for advancing science and technology (BLAST).\u00a0 ODU BLAST taps into the strengths and talents of the ODU faculty and graduate students from each of the six ODU colleges who collectively address one of ODU\u2019s signature area, <em>the mitigation, and adaptation to climate change and sea level rise.\u00a0 <\/em>ODU is poised to offer a unique, exciting, and rewarding STEM-related experience to a total of one-hundred and eighty rising 9<sup>th<\/sup> &amp; 10-grade students from across the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ODU BLAST 2018\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RaEeRy2NoXw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rationale: <\/strong>The following rationale is offered in support of the ODU BLAST program that will focus on STEM in the context of one of ODU&#8217;s signature areas, the <em>mitigation, and adaption to climate change and sea level rise<\/em>.\u00a0 ODU encourages and supports research, teaching, and outreach on a number of topics related to the mitigation and adaptation to climate change and sea level rise including sustainable building, development of alternative energies, responses to hazardous environments, and how to better communicate and engage the community on visioning and shaping their future.\u00a0Children\u2019s plays developed in partnership by faculty in the College of Arts and Letters and College of Science attest to the unique ways to communicate climate change and sea level rise.\u00a0 Faculty in the College of Business address important issues related to insurance and risk management, and conduct socio-economic and transportation logistics analysis.
