{"id":6,"date":"2017-06-22T11:18:46","date_gmt":"2017-06-22T15:18:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.pprd.odu.edu\/odufacultytemplate\/?page_id=6"},"modified":"2017-06-28T01:01:22","modified_gmt":"2017-06-28T05:01:22","slug":"about-me","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/odugearup2017\/","title":{"rendered":"ODU GEAR UP 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Old Dominion University will host ODU GEAR UP, a summer and residential, hands-on intensive STEM-related program from June 25-28 for eighty rising 9<sup>th<\/sup> and 10<sup>th<\/sup> grade students and eight teacher-chaperones from across Virginia.\u00a0 Tours and other special STEM-related evening events are planned to enhance the on-campus ODU experience.\u00a0 ODU GEAR UP is funded by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) GEAR UP program\u00a0with the support from Virginia Space Grant Consortium.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/odugearup2017\/\">June 25-28, 2017 &#8211; ODU GEAR UP 2017 (click here)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/odublast2017\/\">June 18-21, 2017 &#8211; ODU BLAST 2017 (click here)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/ODUBLAST2016\/\">June 25-28, 2016 &#8211; ODU BLAST 2016 (click here)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In effort to increase student college enrollment and success and to transform the lives of low-income families and their communities, GEAR UP Virginia (GUV) began offering college preparatory services and skills development to a cohort of seventh-grade students at 28 middle schools in 15 school districts beginning in 2014-15. These students will receive support through their first year of college, following high school graduation in 2020. Beginning in 2015-16, GUV also offers critical college preparation services annually to up to 50 homeless youth (priority students), during their senior year at four high schools, and support them through their first year of college<\/p>\n<p>More photos from previous related events\u00a0can be found on the ODU BLAST 2017 web page (click here) and ODU BLAST 2016 web page (<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/ODUBLAST2016\/\">click here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ODU BLAST 2017\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GF138j0NSZI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction: <\/strong>Old Dominion University will develop and host ODU GEAR UP, a program that is intended to build leaders for advancing science and technology and to increase student college enrollment and success and to transform the lives of low-income families and their communities.\u00a0 ODU GEAR UP taps into the strengths and talents of the ODU faculty and graduate students from each of the six ODU colleges who collectively address one of ODU\u2019s signature area, <em>the mitigation and adaptation to climate change and sea level rise.\u00a0 <\/em>ODU is poised to offer a unique, exciting, and rewarding STEM-related experience to a total of one-hundred and eighty rising 9 &amp; 10 grade students from across the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rationale: <\/strong>The following rationale is offered in support of the ODU BLAST program that will focus on STEM in the context of one of ODU&#8217;s signature areas, the <em>mitigation and adaption to climate change and sea level rise<\/em>.\u00a0 ODU encourages and supports research, teaching, and outreach on a number of topics related to the mitigation and adaptation to climate change and sea level rise including sustainable building, development of alternative energies, changes in the ocean, and how to better communicate and engage the community on visioning and shaping their future.<\/p>\n<p>Children\u2019s plays developed in partnership by faulty in the College of Arts and Letters and College of Science attest to the unique ways to communicate climate change and sea level rise.\u00a0 Faculty in the College of Business address important issues related to insurance and risk management, and conduct socio-economic and transportation logistics analysis.
