The\u00a0Faculty Emeriti Association (FEA)\u00a0<\/strong>was established in February 1982 to help Old Dominion University (ODU)<\/strong> utilize all the institutional knowledge and creativity of its retired faculty. The association was founded by Dorothy Jones, Faculty Emeritus from the School of Business<\/a><\/strong>. Some of the first tasks of the organization included tutoring students, counseling professors and aiding disabled students with their studies.\u00a0The association also brings together the institution\u2019s faculty emeriti to maintain collegial, scholarly and social relations among the Old Dominion community, and to further the welfare of the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At its September 1972 meeting, the Board of Visitors<\/strong><\/a>, upon the recommendation of the University<\/strong> Senate<\/strong>, established the title Emeritus at Old Dominion. In establishing the appointments of emeriti faculty, the Board presented the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guidelines<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  1. The title Emeritus shall be granted only by the Board of Visitors<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Eligibility for the title of Professor Emeritus and Associate Professor Emeritus shall be limited to full-time faculty who are retiring in the ranks of Professor and Associate Professor and who have served the university for a period of not less than ten years consecutively prior to retirement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Administrative officers who hold faculty rank and tenure may be named “emeritus” provided they have served ten years consecutively prior to retirement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. To be eligible for emeritus appointment, a faculty member shall be recommended by their Chairman and approved by the Dean, Provost and President. Administrators shall be recommended by the President.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Privileges<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    1. Use of the library as a faculty member<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Attendance at faculty meetings (non-voting), at receptions and at academic processions, including Commencement<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. The same tuition rates for spouses and dependent children enrolled in the university as are provided for active faculty<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Listing in all university publications on the same basis as active faculty<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. Receipt of all university informational bulletins which are circulated to active faculty<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    6. Attendance at lectures, concerts, athletic events, banquets, etc., and usage of university facilities including parking lots, on the same basis as active faculty<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    7. Office and laboratory space, or library study space, will be granted temporarily, if available, but priority will be given to active faculty, staff and students when space is limited<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
