Dr. Kent E. Carpenter<\/strong> (1953-2026) was an Eminent Scholar and professor in the Department of Biological Sciences<\/strong> at Old Dominion University (ODU)<\/strong>. Dr. Carpenter taught at ODU from 1996 until his death in 2026. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1975 and his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1985. Prior to joining ODU, Dr. Carpenter was affiliated with Silliman University in the Philippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Service to Old Dominion and the Profession<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In addition to teaching courses in the the Department of Biological Sciences, Dr. Carpenter spent a considerable amount of his time researching marine life with a concentration on coral life around the Philippines. He was a founding member of the Marine Bony Fishes Red List Authority, and assisted other marine species specialist groups with their research. Dr. Carpenter won several awards including the prestigious State Council of Higher Education for Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award<\/a> (2020), one of the highest honors for a teacher in Virginia, and Old Dominion University’s Faculty Research Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
