The\u00a0Department of Communication and Theatre Arts<\/strong> at\u00a0Old Dominion University (ODU)<\/strong> is one of the departments in the\u00a0College of Arts and Letters<\/strong><\/a>. The department offers the Bachelor of Science in Communication and a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Dance.<\/p>\n

History<\/h3>\n

At the\u00a0Norfolk Division of the College of William & Mary<\/strong>, theater productions were mostly produced by several student organizations including the Dramatic Club, as early as 1931, and the Masquers from the mid-1940s through 1963. A public speaking course debuted in the early 1940s and a play production class was offered in 1946. A theater workshop, which functioned as a laboratory class, was added in 1955. These were all offered under the Department of English<\/strong>. In 1966, ODU hired Paul Dicklin to be the director of theater and staged his first production in 1967. A bachelor of arts in speech was offered around 1974 with the first diplomas received in 1975. Around 1978 or 1979, the Speech Communication and Theater Arts Department was created and the bachelor of arts in theater and dance was first offered in the fall of 1979.<\/p>\n
