The building was named after John S. Alfriend, a member of President Lewis W. Webb, Jr.&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/oduwiki\/2016\/09\/08\/board-of-visitors\/\"><strong>Advisory Board<\/strong><\/a> from 1947 to 1962 and president of the Old Dominion Educational Foundation. From 1967 to 2021, the <strong>Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry<\/strong> had their offices in Alfriend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction on the building began in 1965 and was dedicated in 1967. Prior to 1967, the Department of Chemistry was housed in the old Science Building, now <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/oduwiki\/2018\/02\/09\/william-b-spong-jr-hall\/\"><strong>William B. Spong, Jr. Hall<\/strong><\/a>. In 2019, construction on the new <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/oduwiki\/2021\/10\/14\/chemistry-building\/\"><strong>Chemistry Building<\/strong><\/a> began and was completed in time for the start of the Fall 2021 semester. In October 2021, the building&#8217;s name was changed to the Alfriend Building.
