Batten Arts and Letters Building (BAL), 1970s<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The\u00a0Batten Arts and Letters Building<\/strong>, or BAL for short, is the tallest building at\u00a0Old Dominion University<\/strong> (ODU)<\/strong>\u00a0and houses the\u00a0College of Arts and Letters<\/strong><\/a> departments and offices as well as classroom space and computer labs.\u00a0 It is located off Hampton Boulevard between 44th and 45th Streets.<\/p>\n

History<\/h3>\n

Construction on BAL started in 1971 and was completed in June 1972. Originally named simply the Arts and Letters Building, the nine-story building was renamed the Batten Arts and Letters building in 1976 in honor of Frank Batten<\/strong><\/a>, former publisher of the\u00a0Virginian-Pilot<\/em> newspaper and the first Rector of the\u00a0Board of Visitors<\/strong><\/a>. To help update the 45-year-old building, a renovation project was completed from 2007 to 2008.<\/p>\n
