The\u00a0University Village<\/strong>, or the Village familiarly,\u00a0is a 75-acre, mixed-use development across Hampton Boulevard from the main campus of\u00a0Old Dominion University (ODU)<\/strong>. The Village is bound by 47th Street to the north, 41st Street to the south, Hampton Boulevard to the west, and Killam Avenue to the east.<\/p>\n

History<\/h3>\n

The idea for the Village was developed under President James V. Koch. In order to make room for the project, local establishments that were frequented by ODU students, including the 4400 Club and Friar Tucks, were closed in 1999. Construction of the Village began that same year, and the first building to be constructed was the Ted Constant Convocation Center<\/strong><\/a>, which opened in 2002. In addition to shops and restaurants, the Village includes the\u00a0Mitchum Basketball Performance Center<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0University Village Apartments,\u00a0University Village Bookstore<\/strong>,\u00a0Innovation Research Park<\/strong><\/a>, the\u00a0Public Safety<\/strong> office, the\u00a0Arts District<\/strong>, Children’s Learning and Research Center (CLRC)<\/strong><\/a>, a hotel, and two parking garages. The Barry Art Museum<\/strong><\/a>, located just south of the Village at the corner of Hampton Boulevard and 43rd Street, opened to the public in 2018.<\/p>\n
