The\u00a0Arthur and Phyllis Kaplan Orchid Conservatory<\/strong> contains the largest public orchid collection in Hampton Roads and is located between the\u00a0Pretlow Planetarium<\/strong><\/a> and the\u00a0Oceanography and Physical Sciences Building<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0on the campus of\u00a0Old Dominion University (ODU)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

History<\/h3>\n

Opened in April 2008, the orchid conservatory was named in honor of Norfolk physician Arthur Kaplan and his wife who donated their collection of approximately 1,000 rare plants to ODU. The 3,000-square-foot conservatory houses five greenhouses, including a display house with a waterfall and pool, a potting room, and space for faculty and students to conduct research.<\/p>\n
