Opsonization was a very broad topic that was covered in the Introduction to Immunology that proved very useful in other courses, specifically Pathophysiology. Opsonization is the attachment of an opsonin protein to the cell membrane. This process is crucial in the activation of the complement pathway. The complement pathway is discussed when discussing the topic of immunology and pathophysiology. It plays a crucial role in the immune system clearing foreign pathogens and protecting self cells. The details of the specific opsonins used were discussed in the Introduction to Immunology, and the downstream affects of dysfunctional opsonization was discussed when discussing pathophysiology. Understanding the connection between the specific opsonins and the overall disease process has helped me to grow as a student.
