Journal 4: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a psychological theory that explains the five basic human needs, which include physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. Here’s how each level of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs relates to my experiences with technology:

Physiological Needs: This level refers to the basic needs for survival, such as food, water, shelter, and sleep. In terms of technology, there are various applications and devices that cater to our physiological needs, such as health monitoring apps, sleep tracking devices, and food delivery apps.

  • For example, I use a fitness tracker that monitors my physical activity, heart rate, and sleep patterns. This device helps me stay aware of my physiological needs and make adjustments to my lifestyle accordingly.

Safety Needs: This level pertains to the need for physical and emotional security. Technology has provided numerous tools and platforms to help us feel secure, such as home security systems, online privacy tools, and emergency alert apps.

  • For instance, I use a password manager app to securely store and manage my online passwords, which helps me feel more secure in my online activities.

Love and Belonging Needs: This level refers to our need for social connections and relationships. Technology has revolutionized the way we communicate and connect with others, with social media platforms, messaging apps, and online forums being just a few examples.

  • I use social media to stay connected with my family and friends who live far away. This technology has enabled me to maintain close relationships despite the physical distance.

Esteem Needs: This level pertains to our need for self-esteem and self-respect. Technology has created numerous platforms and tools that cater to our need for recognition and validation, such as social media platforms, online reviews, and digital portfolios.

  • For example, I use LinkedIn to showcase my professional achievements and connect with other professionals in my field. This platform helps me feel recognized and respected for my work.

Self-Actualization Needs: This level refers to our need for self-fulfillment and personal growth. Technology has provided us with various tools and resources to help us achieve our personal goals, such as e-learning platforms, productivity apps, and digital libraries.

  • I use a learning app to learn different codes and expand my knowledge. This app helps me achieve my personal goal of becoming code fluent in Linux and Python, which contributes to my self-actualization needs.

In conclusion, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs provides a useful framework for understanding how technology has impacted our lives and how it caters to our basic human needs. Each level of the hierarchy is represented in various digital experiences, from health monitoring apps to e-learning platforms. By recognizing how technology caters to our basic needs, we can better understand its impact on our lives and use it to enhance our well-being.
