According to Oxford dictionary deviance is defined as “the fact or state of straying from conventional or recognized standards, especially in social or sexual behavior”. It is behavior that goes against organizational norms, for example a coworker bullying or hazing a coworker, viewing explicit content on company time, sharing company secrets with competitors, and sabotaging the reputation of the company on social media. With the rise of remote work, I would like to think that “proximity” will begin to play a large part in frequent deviant behavior. At your employer’s facility it is easy to take corrective action against employees that present deviant behavior to others or the company, but with employees being able to bring their work home they can cut corners, engage in things that they normally won’t do at work. Overall, cyber technology has increased the number of avenues for workplace deviance to occur, as well as making it simpler to commit and harder to detect.
