Article Review 1

After going through several articles in the international journal of cybersecurity criminology, I stumbled across one article that caught my eye “ LGBTQ Cyberbullying on Online Learning Platforms Among University Students”. Cyber bullying is a cybercrime that has become a new way of harassing individuals in the cyber world and is rapidly increasing. This article’s purpose is to analyze the factors influencing cyberbullying within the LGBTQ in Thailand on online platforms amoung universities there. This topic relates to the principle of social science because it’s studying the behavior of humans on the online space. Which presents the question, where does the motive of cyberbullying come from?
The methods used to determine this was a quantitative research style by dividing up this population of Thailand by demographic and personal psychological factors, situation and environmental factors, and online learning platform factors. Within the demographic and personal psychological factors it showed that gender and LGBTQ cyberbilling of sexual minorites male and females teenagers and youth had high levels of bullying than their heterosexual counterparts. 19% of the LGBTQ participants reported being harrased for their biological sex and 41% for their gender identity or expression. Due to online courses at these universities more suicidal thoughts been to occur at a high level of 35% with 14% of them attempting to try it. While those in a face to face setting had 9.4% on thoughts and 4.2% attempting, shocking right? That is because those in the online setting didn’t have much of a support system like the ones in the face to face setting did.
Those online experienced problems with depression which is becoming a leading factor worldwide for this community and it’s not surprising at all. That’s only because they have been receiving backlash for years and their voices are just now starting to be heard.
This topic relates to the topics of objectivity and Empiricism. It demonstrates objectivity because it is doing a study in a value-free manner and is only done to enhance the knowledge of those looking and seeking for it. It erases the opinion based factors that could occur. Empiricism is shown because this study is shown in one of senses which is we can see it happening with our own eye in the online cyber world.
In conclusion, scientists and others around the world are able to see what is happening online as for what the LGBTQ community has to deal with and since Covid-19 has changed the way users are now more involved with the internet. Cyberbullying is going to continue to happen in all aspects of the youth. Leading to severe problems such as suicude, low self-esteem, and depression. Although this information is only valid for those in Thailand, this isn’t something we can just sit here and ignore. To prevent this from getting worse parents, university and councilors have to get involved!
