Mid-Semester Reflection

  1. Study habits

I study at least 15 hours for each of my classes every week. I believe that I need to add more hours into my studying for my Intro Chemistry Lab. For the most part, I study at home. I recently went to the perry library to do my writing essay. I am most likely to start studying on campus rather than at home. I find myself distract more often at home than on the campus’s library because my family will call for my attention which causes me to lose focus on prior work.

A way I can remove certain distractions while studying is either going to the campus to have a better focus or tell my family members that I am not going to be available for this amount of time because I am studying. I study during the daytime. When the sunlight is out and my working environment is bright, I am more awake and fuller on energy to work on assignments and study. When I use to work during the night, I felt as if my assignments were rushed and not well thought of. I also feel too tired to study in my room. I feel more focused and alert during the morning time than the night time because I don’t feel the urge to go to sleep.

  • Learning Style

Depending on the amount of course lessons we study, I study for 2 hours on my notes. Then, I take a break for 30 minutes and go back to my notes for 1 more hour. I usually do this for classes such as Sociology and Introductory Chemistry. For English Composition, I study lecture notes for around 1 hour. New study techniques that I used recently is having time-management. Having time-management for studying is one of the most efficient ways to learning new material. Information is difficult to keep when I do not take breaks between studying because I studied throughout. Taking notes from the article.

  • Transition to College

Due to the current pandemic the world is facing, I somewhat did not expect college to be like it is now. Many college students before can say that their freshman experience was great except for our class of 2024. Majority of organizations and classes have moved their events to virtual meeting. The inability to interact and create bonds in person is difficult for me. I did expect the college workload to be heavy as an online student because assignments can easily pile up. The staff and faculty at Old Dominion University are amazing and helpful just how I assumed they would be. They work so hard to help students for a variety of situations. What surprised me about my experience as a freshman student this semester is that

  • Connecting to Campus

One problem I have encountered this semester is getting help for my English essays. I plan on using the writing center. I can learn more from the corrections based of the changes in my essay and I can get a better grade for my essays. Most of student in the Health Science learning community have helped me so far this semester because we may remind each other that a certain assignment is due on a specific date or help each other understand material better for the classes we share. One interesting meeting I attended to was the zip code effect I recently attended to. The host discussed how the zip code we live in can determine how long we live. It was an eye opener to how available resources can impact someone’s life span such as school, finances, and jobs.
