- My intended major is Nursing. The reason why I choose nursing as my major is because I grown up hearing what my mom does at work and have always had interested in the medical field. Giving full attention to whoever need of my assistance, Learning how to handle with equipment quickly by observation, and responding to things immediately. Currently, I do not recall any experience in my major. However, I have checked my mother’s blood pressure before through a digital blood pressure monitor.
- A type of setting that I prefer to work in is somewhere that keeps me moving and being active. I like moving around to keep my body active. In 10 years, my career goal is to become a pediatrician. I want to start as a pediatric nurse to gain experience for a couple years. Careers that I am looking into is nursing, psychology, health service administration. All of these occupations was recommended to me through Old Dominion University’s “MyMajor” quiz.
- TRANSITION FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO COLLEGE
- I expect the biggest difference between high school and college by the amount of effort you put into doing the work assigned and storing the information long term. I expect my biggest challenge is having a possible overload of work to do and becoming frustrated about it which can possibly affect my online classes because I know that my assignments will pile up. Also, since I am a commuter this semester, The hardest thing I will have is navigating through my Chemistry lab class. I accidentally came on campus instead attending the zoom class.
- STUDY HABITS AND ASSIGNMENTS
- There is a significant difference between “studying” and “homework.” When most students do homework, they might be more focused on finishing the assignment rather than obtaining new information. When it comes to studying, most students may read their notes more than once in order to remember that information. I plan on studying around 19 hours a week this semester. I expect to study more in chemistry lecture because the material looks heavy. Other than HLTH 101, I expect myself to spend time studying sociology less than other classes because I mainly have to remember terminologies and special sociology. When it comes to studying in general, my phone and my family members are potential distractions because I stay at home. A way I try to avoid these distractions is putting my phone on “do not disturb” to avoid notifications and I put stick notes outside my door that I’m in a meeting or study. I also text all of them that I am in a meeting. I usually study around the afternoon to night. In order to stay organized with my assignments, I use a planner to help me know when to work and when homework are due. This year, I am trying to do my best as a freshman student. I will always be in contact with my family because I am still living with them but I will have to limit the amount of interaction while doing work or studying. When it comes to my social life, such as Calling or face chatting with friends will be reduced significantly. Balancing school work with other factors in my life will be difficult I know what is important for me to prioritize.
- Learning style
- – Studying techniques that work best for me is re-read my notes, use a website called “Quizlet” to remember terms and definition, and watching YouTube videos that is based on the topic I am struggling with. I use different techniques for different classes such as sociology and Introduction Chemistry by look over my notes and draw small pictures, charts, or a diagram.
- Connecting to campus
- The writing center is academic resource that I can use to get a good grade this semester because they can help with my essay or reports in the future. A non-academic resource I can use is google scholars( might use this for my English class). I believe that I will use is Old dominion’s tutoring service. I would like to learn more about the ODU library resources. I want to know how to navigate OneSearch where students can find books and journals. In high school, I participated in the national art honors society (NAHS) and fashion show backstage crew. I am currently looking in the African American association. I am also looking into some groups that involve women empowerment.
