Mid-Semester Reflection

Considering your Pre-Semester Reflection, identify the changes you have made between the start of the semester and now, and how you are going to continue working on areas that you are struggling.

Study Habits

  • What classes are you doing well in, and why?
    • I have been doing well in Chem because I am comfortable with that subject, and I believe that the teacher does a good job of making sure we are understanding the material before going onto another concept.
  • What classes did you identify as needing assistance in?
    • I have not needed assistance in a class so far, but I would consider Art my least strong class because the lectures tend to be very long, and I lose focus because I get bored.
  • What changes have you made (i.e. amount of time, location, campus resources, study strategies, etc…)?
    • I have spent more time studying in the library than in my dorm room as in the library I am more likely to focus on my work, and there are more materials for studying at my disposal.

Transition to College

  • What expectations did you have coming to college?
    • I expected classes to have a lot more homework and for tests to be a little more challenging.
  • Have those expectations come to fruition, or not?
    • For me classes have had a lot less homework than when I was in highschool although the college assignments are a bit lengthier. Some tests have been easier than I expected but for the most part a few have been more challenging than high school tests.
  • How?
    • Some tests have been easier than I expected but for the most part a few have been more challenging than high school tests.
  • In what way is your college experience different from what you expected?
    • Classes have not been as difficult as I imagined. I thought I would be spending most of my time studying for classes, but I have had a lot more free time than I expected.
  • What has surprised you about your experiences so far this semester?
    • I have been surprised by how fast this semester has been going, and how many new connections I have made with new people.
  • If you live on campus: What has been your toughest challenge with moving away to college? Easiest challenge to overcome?
    • I tend to be late to things and wake up late. So without someone to keep me accountable to being on time, I have been late to a few places a few times. So I am still working to overcome this challenge, but the easiest to overcome was being away from home because since I live so close to campus I can go home whenever I want.

Major

  • Name something you have learned about your intended major that you did not know at the beginning of the semester.
    • I learned how important interacting with the patient is to my major. I knew there would be some patient interaction, but I did not realize how vital it was to the major. This is because I was more focused on the chemistry and science aspects of the major.
  • Have your feelings changed about your intended major? List some thoughts you are having.
    • Not really because I know this major will help me get my foot in the door of the healthcare field, and there will always be a need for nurses so I still feel comfortable with my intended major.
  • Is there another subject (major or minor) that you are interested in learning more about?
    • Not really, but I do find art and fashion interesting. However, I do not find them interesting enough to pursue them for a degree.

Connecting to Campus

  • Name one problem or challenge you have encountered this semester, and which resource(s) at ODU you have/can utilize to assist with this situation.
    • I have not encountered many problems this semester, but when I first got to ODU I struggled with finding my way around campus, and getting to my classes. However, my problems were solved when I downloaded the ODU app because it showed directions to everywhere I needed to go. After using directions to find my class for the first few times I became a lot more familiar with the campus, and could make my way around without having to use Apple Maps.
  • Is there a friend, roommate, professor, advisor, or group in the ODU community who has helped you so far this semester? If so, how did they help you?
    • Yes, one of my friends in the community has helped me stay focused on classes. They have made sure I get to class on time, and we spend time in the library to help each other if we are struggling with a certain topic in a class.
  • Have you attended an interest meeting for a club? Why did you decide to get involved or not get involved?
    • Not yet because I want to focus on my grades first.
