Preparing for Interviews

Now a days you really can’t get a job or position in any field without some type of interview. Today, I had an interview for an internship position with one of the nations leading pharmaceutical companies. Was I nervous? Oh most definitely! But I think the better question is was I prepared? -Yes

It is normal to be nervous before an interview for a job position. I am a firm believer that nerves are another way of your body letting you know that you truly do care about the outcome of a situation. So embrace the nerves! But, being prepared before your interview can help ease those nerves and increase your confidence. Here are a few tips to help you be interview ready…

  • Know & Understand the different ways where interviews can take place
    • In person – face to face contact with the potential employer/ panel of people within the organization
    • Phone  – call in conference call with potential employer
    • Video Chat – similar to phone interview however they can physically see you via video call
  • Dress the part!
    • It can never hurt to overdress! If you are unsure of what you should wear to an interview resort to a business professional look. Even if the position is casual, it can never hurt to present yourself professionally.
    • Tip: If you are doing a video chat interview, make sure that the top half of your body is business professional (this is what they will see in the camera). That way, you can sit down at your computer comfortably in sweatpants and your interviewer will never know.
  • Bring a printed copy of your resume, your planner, a notebook to take notes, and a pen
  • Do your research!
    • It is important that you take the time to research the company that you are applying to. Employers want to know that you are familiar with their organization and that you fully understand the job position that you are applying for.
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early
  • Make sure that you have good manners and body language (clear eye contact, good posture)
  • Be yourself & Respond Honestly
    • Interviews are often a time for first impressions. Therefore, it is imperative that you leave your potential employer with a positive first impression. To do this, it is important that you answer all questions authentically and honestly. Speak clearly & confidently.
    • Tip: Tie your answers back to your skills and accomplishments
  • Ask Questions
    • Asking questions at the end of an interview is important because it gives you a better sense of the job. Not to mention, asking questions shows that you are truly interested in the position and allows you to engage further in the interview process.

When you get the opportunity to interview for a job, be confident in yourself! The employee clearly liked you on paper (based on your resume/application) and now they just want to get to know you as a person. Interviews are exciting! You are one step closer to getting that job! Congrats 🙂
