This week I read in Krug about how what we do on websites is not intuitive. Rather, we muddle through things as best we can and stick with what we know works, even if it is the most direct path. The most important thing for a website is that the person should only have to really think to make one click for every three unconscious clicks. The user needs to feel like they are making progress. Signs can most easily point to how to get to the desired webpage.
In Caplin, the main focus of the paper was talking about symbolism. Rather than detailing the code for what different programs or starting the operating system, computer interface systems use symbols to display different programs, applications, or operating systems. I thought it was interesting that the symbols that we use to represent concepts echo an older era, like an old horn to represent the car horn that is actually made by electric sensors.
