In this class we were given a few different “Competencia Cultural” assignments. For these assignments, you watched a video on different parts of Spanish culture, and then answered questions to show you understood and learned from the video. These videos showed parts of the culture such as how people interact with one another, family life, and sports.

I found that these videos gave me a new understanding of Spanish culture because they depicted genuine Spanish families and places. I am also a visual learner, so seeing the culture in video form was extremely helpful. The videos also showed the many differences and similarities between Spanish culture and American culture. For example, football (called soccer in the U.S.) is the most popular sport in Spain. In the U.S. the most popular sport is football (called American football in Spain). It helped to open my eyes to the many different and beautiful lives people lead in other cultures.

Engaging in Communities

I believe that it is extremely important to try and engage in not only your local community, but also the global community. Doing so allows you to connect with the people around you and the globe, to build a better understanding of the world and to grow as a person.

I have not been able to engage in my local community in a way that relates to Spanish. I have not had a chance to engage in any global cultures either. However, I just became a world culture studies minor, and I hope to get more involved locally and globally this way!

Interpersonal Communication

In Spanish 101, we did interpersonal communication activities such as having conversations in Spanish with our classmates and discussion boards. The conversations with our classmates were done during class, and they were spontaneous. The professor would give us a small list of things to talk about, and then put us into breakout rooms to interact with one another. Discussion boards were over a few different topics, with my favorite one requiring us to make a family tree, which is attached below.

I feel that throughout the semester my ability to have conversations in Spanish, especially spontaneous ones, has improved immensely. At first I could barely string together more than a few words, and often needed to refer to my notes or vocabulary lists for help. Now, I feel that I have enough words memorized that I only need to refer back to my notes and lists when it is a word I do not use often, or is new to me. I feel that I have improved this way in discussion boards as well. My sentences can now range over a few different topics, rather than just the basics of my name and where I am from. One difficulty I had to overcome was putting together sentences. I excelled at memorizing vocabulary, but found myself at a loss when it came to putting them together. I have always been someone who learns best from flash cards, and at the beginning of the class it took me a while to figure out a way to work on the actual application of the vocabulary. I learned that I do well with practicing putting together different sentences, and then slowly building on those overtime.

Presentational Speaking

In this class we had to do a few different speaking assignments. The assignments are in a conversation/interview format. Two are done with a classmate and the other two are done with the professor. I have attached my first conversation assignment I did with my classmate Madyson.

I feel that I have improved immensely since the video I have attached. While my classmate and I could carry on a conversation, I feel that my responses were extremely slow and required me to think a lot before answering. Since then, I am now a little quicker, and am able to talk about more things. Now, I feel that I am getting better at understanding and comprehending what is being said to me, and responding accordingly. Next time, I feel that I need to speak more Spanish in my everyday life to prepare for these assignments beforehand.

Presentational Writing

In this class we had two different writing assignments, called “composicións”. The first one required us to write half a page about ourselves, and the second one was an email describing our family. Both were entirely in Spanish, and had to be at least half a page long. I have attached both below.

The first composición I struggled with what I wanted to write. I had to look up a lot of words, and while revising I had to fix a lot of the sentences for structural issues. The second composición, I struggled far less. The family unit has been my favorite unit by far, and I felt I excelled not only with the vocabulary, but with using it effectively. I think this was not only due to it being further into the semester, but also that I had been studying the vocabulary more consistently than I had at the beginning of the class. I feel that next time I can push myself to write more, and go into more detail with what I am writing.

Composicion-Final

Composicion-2

Interpretive Listening

Interpretive listening was incorporated into a few different assignments throughout the course. It was generally formatted as a clip of someone saying sentences in Spanish, and then the sentences had to be interpreted word-for-word, or questions were answered based on what was said. This was done in homework assignments and in tests as well. These assignments could come in video form too, in our competencia culturals. The professor would also speak in Spanish as she did our lessons, but we always had the powerpoint displayed in English. I have attached a screenshot from a homework assignment showing this below.

At first, I found this to be extremely challenging. I struggled to understand what was being said, and then how to spell it. However, as the semester progressed, I found myself being able to use context clues, or vocabulary I did know to figure out what was being said. As we learned the different rules of pronunciation I have also gotten better at spelling. I find it very interesting how words are emphasized, and how that affects their spelling. This is also something I am still working on because I still do struggle at times. After each listening experience, I feel that I get just a little better at my comprehension skills.

listening-activity

Interpretive Reading

Interpretive reading was incorporated into our “lectura” assignments and into our homework. The lectura assignments were generally over a page in our textbook that had a magazine page, a school schedule, etc. that we had to read and interpret. Then, we had to answer questions based on the reading. Our homework questions would be in Spanish, and we would have to interpret them in order to answer correctly. I have attached a homework assignment showing this below.

I feel that these assignments took me longer to complete. I often found myself looking up new words to see what they meant in order to understand the reading. I dealt with this by taking my time with each assignment, and using context clues to assist in interpreting what I was reading. I also feel that the lectura assignments challenged me in a good way, while also expanding my vocabulary.

completar

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication Exploring Culture Learning about Spanish culture was one of my favorite parts of Spanish 101.
