These products and practices helped me better understand values and attitudes in the Hispanic culture as well as my own by showing me how even between Hispanic countries, normalcy is varied. It helped me understand that there are many similarities between how people in the U.S., and how people in Hispanic countries spend their time. For example, 88% of Spanish speakers use social media and probably the same percentage of people from the US do so as well. I realized how life in most countries, is very fast paced, not just the US. By reading the cultural section of Lingro Learning, I found that the common thread between most of society is the importance of fighting for change and progression. This could be found in Unit 5, when the cultural collaborators talked about the person who their country most admired. What surprised me was how all college students in Hispanic countries, commute from home. I always imagined college as a time of leaving home and starting a new life in a dorm or apartment.

^From Lingro Learning Unit 4

From Unit 5 of Lingro Learning^

Engaging in Communities

Engaging in communities, whether it be immediate or global, leads to having to familiarize yourself to new ideas and different perspectives. For example, we had to write a letter nominating the person who we most admired and that assignment gave me time to remind myself of all the reasons why I love my mom. Three sessions on TalkAbroad were assigned to me this semester. Each session was over a certain topic. My classmates and I also had to write comments in Spanish under each other’s completed project and by doing so we applied our Spanish writing skills.

TalkAbroad has helped me become more comfortable talking spontaneously in Spanish. When there was a word, I didn’t know I found a way to get my thought across. Since the TalkAbroad Speakers were assigned to only speak in Spanish, the conversation forced me to not fall back into speaking English. It was a very useful assignment since the conversations were unscripted and mirrored how real-life conversations would be like. The discussion posts with my classmates were good practice since it strengthened and normalized my writing in Spanish. It felt like writing an Instagram comment under someone’s post. I would be able to do so now. I excelled at speaking in the present tense, but when it came to having to speak spontaneously in the preterite tense, I had some trouble. Writing in the Spanish preterite comes easier to me.

Presentational Speaking

In Unit 8, I had to make a video in Spanish describing what I ate the day before. I had to explain what ingredients my meals contained and how they were prepared.

Since the video was supposed to test my pronunciation, I had to redo it a couple of times. I was able to read off my paper while recording the video. No memorization was needed. The video was supposed to be three minutes long and I went below that time frame. If I were to do it again, I would have done the ‘prepare for project’ section because it helped me a lot with previous projects. Also, throughout my semester in Spanish class, I learned new pronunciation skills that helped me improve my speaking skills. For example, my professor went over pronouncing the different sounds of ‘g’ and ‘c’ next to a vowel. We also went over the difference between the Spanish and English ‘t’ and ‘p’ pronunciation.

https://lingrofolio-mediaconvert.s3.amazonaws.com/output/video/2022/11/14/62778_2022-11-14-035040_254.mp4

From the project section of Unit 8 on Lingro Learning^

Presentational Writing

In Unit 1, I had to write a brief description of myself. In Unit 7, I had to create an ad promoting fitness with a minimum of 150 words including affirmative informal commands. I chose to do this by promoting a dance club.

The very first writing assignment introduced me to the basic descriptive adjectives and sentences that I’d need to know when introducing myself to someone new. As the units progressed, the writing assignments got more lengthier, and the grammar became more advanced. Using the present tense became easier for me and almost second nature, especially when writing. The commands, on the other hand, required more effort from me. There are different ways to say a command based on if it’s formal or informal and whether it is positive or negative. I think that if I look over my notes on Lingro Learning, I’ll be able to retain the correct grammar usage and use it spontaneously.

62778_2022-11-09-053056_581Download

From the project section of Unit 7 on Lingro Learning^

Interpretive Listening

Interpretive listening activities appeared under the text section of units 2, 4, and 8. Short videos with questions applying to the video were given to help us interpret what was being said.

In Unit 2, we were given three videos to listen to and in my opinion, they were the hardest to understand because the Spanish seemed very casual and contained some words that I didn’t understand. After listening to the video, a couple of more times, I was able to understand it better. I like how the videos sound like a Spanish conversation that I would hear in a Spanish speaking country. It is more realistic and therefore a useful tool. In Unit 4, there was only one video that I had to listen to. It was easier to understand since the lady in the video, took us to the places that she was talking about, and she used a lot of facial expressions and gestures. In Unit 8, the video was not too difficult to understand. The lady spoke kind of slowly which helped. Overall, listening became easier when my Spanish vocabulary grew.

From the text section of Unit 2 on Lingro Learning^

Interpretive Reading

I read informative information over health and wellbeing in Units 7 and 9.
