I would rather call this section community involvement. I have been fortunate these last years not only to give presentations at exciting academic conferences but to organize numerous talks, poetry events, art events and cultural panels here in Norfolk and in Brooklyn as well. 2019, January, organized and participated in an international poetry reading “Brooklyn-Montreal Exchanges” at the Brooklyn Heights Public  Library, Brooklyn, NY with poets Catherine Cormier-Larose, Madeleine Monette, Catherine Fletcher, Joanna Eleftheriou, Sacha Zabotin and Ewan Turner.

2018, October, participated and read in a university memorial and solidarity service for the Tree of Life Pittsburgh attack.

2018, Sept-December “GPIS Ghosts of French Colonization Lecture Series: NGOs, Alumni, Academics and Diplomatic Spotlights” (a 5 part series including Senegalese-Quebecois rapper Webster, Ex-US Ambassador to Mali and Madascar, Vicki Huddleston, and David Gallup, President of the World Services Authority.

2019, November, organized the lecture by Henri Bore, Consultant Africa Contingency Operations and National Defense University, France (Africa Desk and Terrorism expert), for the Office of International Relations at ODU as part of  the nationwide “International Education Week” initiative.

2018, January, organized and participated in a workshop on désambulation with World Languages and Cultures poet-in-residence Hector Ruiz and the Hampton Roads Alliance Française through a poetic walking tour of downtown Norfolk; organized and initiated the visit of poet-in-residence Hector Ruiz and a special workshop on “walking poetry, reading cities” within my French writing class. FR 312 Writing and Reading.

2018, January, organized and participated in a poetry reading with Montreal poet Hector Ruiz and American poet Tom Yuill titled Montreal-Norfolk Exchanges, Old Dominion University.

2017, October, gave the Arts and Letters Senior Scholar Lecture: “Surrealist Cairo: Overcoming Angst in Lee Miller’s Egyptian Photography.”

2017, October, organized and participated in a round-table discussion on Catalonian independence (with Dr. Luis Guadano in Spanish and Dr. Georg Menz in Political Science) for the Graduate Program of International Studies.

2017, November, screened the Malian film A Screaming Man  (Mahamet Saleh Haroun, 2010) with post-film discussion at the Office of International Relations in conjunction with International Education Week (IEW, a joint initiative with the US Department of State and the US Department of Education to highlight the benefits of international exchange and education worldwide

2017, October, organized and hosted a ballet company from Bordeaux, The ArtisT (dir. Christine Jannin), and their production of Lafayette (Oct 18/19) as well as a public talk on their creative process and ballet techniques, Norfolk VA.

2017, August, organized and hosted a literary reading titled “A Midsummer’s Night Poetry Reading in Honor of Philip Larkin,” at Soldiers and Sailors’ Monument, Manhattan, NY with writers Amy Dannenmueller, Marvin Ginsberg and Ewan Turner

2016, November, led a talk-back on Marie Nimier’s play Another Year, Another Christmas, at the Access Theater, New York City.

2016, November, accompanied an organ recital by James Kosnick of Oliver Messiaen’s Les Corps Glorieux (1939) with his French narration of each movement (Larchmont Methodist C.), Norfolk, VA.

2016, November, led a talk-back on Marie Nimier’s play Another Year, Another Christmas at the Franklinton Playhouse, Columbus Ohio

2016, October, organized a reading (with Dr. Elizabeth Black) of French sea fiction and poetry (Verne, Hugo, Du Bellay, Proust), “Fond de la Mer Littéraire” at O’Connors Brewery (Norfolk VA) in conjunction with a launch of their new Belgian abbey-style beer called Fond de la Mer.

2016, October, organized and participated in a reading with Ying Chen of her poetry and prose (in French and in translation) as part of the ODU Literary Festival

2016, February, Organized and Participated in ”Exploring the Arctic: 1861 and today” an evening presentation of “Science Pub” an initiative to bring the sciences and the humanities to the public at large on the topic of “Polar Explorers” in honor of Jules Verne’s birthday (readings of Verne’s polar narratives, as well as presentations by ODU scientists returning from their own South Pole explorations at Wasserund Brewery, VA Beach.

2012- Oct. Organized and led a Joint Poetry Reading between Café Borjo (Norfolk) and Café Einstein (Berlin) in conjunction with the Photography exhibit “Transitional Spaces in Berlin” by Susan Wanskink.

2012-  Founded and co-organized “UniverCity: ODU/City of Norfolk Urban Symposium” – a monthly series of “Coffeehouse Conversations” linking ODU faculty with local cafés and restaurants.

2012- Fall, organized a 3 part Francophone Humanitarian Lecture Series (with Physicians for Peace; Operation Smile, Operation Blessing)

2012- May, co-organized a lecture/performance by Kossan from the University of Okinawa titled “Zen and the art of the Sanshin” with Dr. Josh Weinstein at Virginia Wesleyan College.

2012- Jan, Organized a lecture by theater Director Scott Hayes at ODU in conjunction with the opening of his production of Molière’s Tartuffe at Regent University.

2012- Jan, Organized a lecture by Conductor Steven Jarvi  at ODU in conjunction with the opening of Philip Glass’s/Jean Cocteau’s Opera Orphée at the VA Opera.

2011, Fall, Organized a 4 part “France and the Francophone World Lecture Series” with local scholars.

2011- Nov, Organized a Moroccan Poetry Night with the ODU French Club and Hampton Roads Alliance Française

2011- Oct, organized a reading/discussion of the  work of Haruki Murakami in conjunction with the release of his novel 1Q84.

2011- May, organized a French Poetry Day for the HamptonRoads Alliance Française

2010-, served on the screening/selection committee for the UJFT Virginia Festival of Jewish Film

2010, Nov-Dec, organized a “France in Crisis” 2 part lecture series with local scholars and diplomats.

2010, Oct, organized a two week French film festival (10 films with discussion afterwards) on the works of Alain Corneau and Claude Chabrol at Old Dominion University with the ODU French Club (“The Corneau/Chabrol Film Festival: A Celebration of Two Seminal Directors in French Film”)

2010, May, organized a poetry reading in honor of Greek poet Cavafy’s birthday at Pasha Mezze Café, Norfolk, VA.
