{"id":1062,"date":"2020-09-01T19:44:03","date_gmt":"2020-09-01T19:44:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/phires\/?page_id=1062"},"modified":"2024-12-04T20:27:05","modified_gmt":"2024-12-04T20:27:05","slug":"home-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.wp.odu.edu\/phires\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Ph-IRES program has ended and will not be accepting applications for 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons has-custom-font-size has-large-font-size is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Philippines International Research Experience for Students <br>(Ph-IRES)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Philippines International Research Experience for Students project (Ph-IRES), 15 U.S. undergraduates (5\/year) will spend 6-8 weeks at Silliman University (SU) conducting independent research with Filipino mentors. Projects will explore conservation biology and molecular ecology of aquatic and terrestrial species.  Potential projects include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>genetic barcoding to document fish diversity <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>life history studies to examine how fishing pressure influences how fish grow and reproduce<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>genetic studies to see how fish populations connect with one another<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>conservation genetics of freshwater or threatened terrestrial animals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits of the program include:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Students will live and work in Dumaguete, Philippines for 6-8 weeks during Summer 2024 and work with faculty mentors from <a href=\"http:\/\/su.edu.ph\/\">Silliman University<\/a> (SU).  Students will continue to work with SU and US mentors after the summer program to prepare their work for presentation and publication.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Summer stipend of $5000<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transportation to\/from Philippines or US Universities and all room and board covered by program<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Travel to annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacnas.org\/what-we-do\/conference\/\">SACNAS National Diversity in STEM Conference <\/a>to present summer research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will be involved in an immersive international research experience that emphasizes collaboration among cultures and development of  world-class skills.
