Ethical Considerations of CRISPR gene editing

There are many ethical considerations to be had with Bio Cybersecurity and specifically CRISPR gene editing. Society is on the brink of a technological nightmare scenario, where our own DNA could become assets or even weapons when in the hands of the wrong people. CRISPR gene editing has allowed for the modification of DNA strands to include malicious code and exploitable packages. This futuristic scenario is unlikely, but the fact that it is possible is downright disturbing. The ethics of editing ones DNA without any malicious intent is a hot button issue already. Introducing the idea of using someone’s edited DNA for malicious purposes brings up issues concerning privacy, liability, and morality.

DNA is ultimately what makes everyone unique. So in that sense, it would be one of the few things individuals should hold closest to them, keeping it private and protected. While gene editing does provide some benefits, I believe that the only considerations for gene edited should be those in dire situations or for purely academic purposes. Digitizing DNA is not something that should be taken lightly. I believe that privacy and protection should outweigh most if not all scenarios in which gene editing is present.
