Troubleshooting is one of the primary skills highlighted in my ePortfolio. Throughout my cybersecurity coursework, previous internship, and current position as an IT Support and Security Technician, I have strengthened this skill by diagnosing technical problems, identifying their root causes, and implementing effective solutions while minimizing downtime for users.

My troubleshooting process typically begins with gathering information from the user and examining the symptoms of the problem. I then identify possible causes, test appropriate solutions, and verify that the issue has been fully resolved. This process requires technical knowledge, critical thinking, patience, adaptability, and clear communication.

Artifact One: Windows Laptop Deployment Knowledge Base

The first artifact demonstrating my troubleshooting skills is a knowledge base article I created for deploying and configuring new Windows laptops. The guide documents important parts of the deployment process, including:

  • Preparing and configuring Windows
  • Installing required applications
  • Setting up OneDrive
  • Configuring Microsoft Teams and Outlook
  • Applying system and software updates
  • Resolving common deployment problems
  • Verifying that the workstation is ready for the user

I created this guide after performing the laptop deployment process myself and documenting each step. Developing the article required me to evaluate the process from both a technician’s and a user’s perspective. I needed to anticipate common problems and explain their solutions in a way that another technician could easily understand and reproduce.

This artifact demonstrates not only my technical troubleshooting ability but also my skills in documentation and knowledge sharing. A well-written knowledge base article can reduce repeated errors, improve consistency, and help technicians resolve future issues more efficiently.

Artifact Two: Printer and Scanner Connectivity Support Ticket

The second artifact is a resolved support ticket involving printer and scanner connectivity. The user was unable to use the required printing and scanning functions, which affected their ability to complete daily work.

To resolve the issue, I investigated the device’s connection and existing configuration, diagnosed a software and driver problem, installed the appropriate software, and configured the printer using its IP address. I then tested both printing and scanning and confirmed with the user that each function worked correctly.

This artifact demonstrates my systematic troubleshooting process. I gathered information, evaluated possible causes, tested a solution, and verified the final result with the user. It also reflects the importance of communication during technical support because resolving the technical problem was only one part of the process. I also needed to keep the user informed and ensure that the solution met their needs.

Strongest Artifact

I consider the printer and scanner support ticket to be the stronger of the two artifacts. It provides a clear example of my ability to apply technical knowledge to a real-world problem that directly affected a user’s productivity.

The artifact demonstrates several connected abilities: diagnosing an issue, identifying the proper drivers and software, configuring a network-connected device, testing multiple functions, and communicating with the user throughout the process. Most importantly, it shows that I can follow a problem from its initial report through successful resolution.

Reflection

These experiences have taught me that effective troubleshooting is more than applying a quick technical fix. It requires understanding the entire problem, considering how it affects the user, testing solutions carefully, and confirming that normal functionality has been restored.

Troubleshooting will remain an important part of my professional development as I continue pursuing a career in cybersecurity. Security professionals must be able to investigate unusual behavior, identify root causes, evaluate possible risks, and respond with effective solutions. The skills demonstrated by these artifacts provide a strong foundation for handling more advanced IT and cybersecurity challenges
