As a senior cybersecurity student at Old Dominion University, I have learned about security policies, risk management, network security, cybercrime, and methods organizations use to protect their systems and information. My CompTIA Security+ certification has also strengthened my understanding of threats, vulnerabilities, access control, incident response, and security operations.

My education has been supported by practical experience from my internship and current position as an IT Support and Security Technician. In these roles, I have assisted users, configured workstations, managed accounts, investigated security alerts, supported Microsoft 365 environments, and resolved technical problems. The three professional skills I chose to highlight in my ePortfolio are troubleshooting, documentation, and automation. These skills represent my ability to solve problems, communicate technical information, and improve the efficiency of IT processes.

Skill 1: Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting is one of the strongest skills I have developed. Technical problems are not always accompanied by an obvious cause or a clear solution. A user may only know that an application is not opening, a printer is not responding, or a computer is running slowly. My responsibility is to gather information, examine the symptoms, identify possible causes, and test solutions until normal functionality is restored.

One experience that demonstrates this skill involved resolving a printer and scanner connectivity issue. I reviewed the existing printer configuration and determined that the device was using an incorrect or generic driver. I installed the correct manufacturer software, configured the printer using its IP address, and tested its printing and scanning functions. I then confirmed with the user that the device was operating correctly.

This experience taught me the value of following a systematic process. Instead of making random changes, I first gathered information and narrowed down the possible causes. I also learned that a technical issue is not fully resolved until the solution has been tested and confirmed with the user. This approach has helped me troubleshoot problems involving Windows, Microsoft 365, Outlook, virtual private networks, user accounts, software, and network connected devices.

Troubleshooting is directly relevant to cybersecurity. Security professionals must investigate unusual activity, determine its source, evaluate its impact, and choose an appropriate response. The same critical thinking process I use to resolve a technical support issue can also be used to investigate a security alert or potential incident.

Skill 2: Documentation

Documentation is another skill that has become increasingly important throughout my professional development. In IT and cybersecurity, documentation allows technicians to share knowledge, maintain accurate records, and provide evidence of completed work. Good documentation should explain what happened, what actions were taken, and what result was achieved.

One artifact that demonstrates this skill is a knowledge base article I created for deploying and configuring Windows laptops. The article documents the laptop imaging process, required software installation, system updates, OneDrive setup, Microsoft Teams and Outlook configuration, and common troubleshooting steps. I created the guide after completing the deployment process myself and recording each step in a logical order.

Writing this article required me to consider the needs of another technician who might not already be familiar with the process. I needed to make the instructions clear, accurate, and easy to follow. The guide helps standardize deployments and reduces the possibility of important steps being overlooked. It can also save time because technicians do not have to recreate the process whenever a new computer is prepared.

I have also developed documentation skills while recording support ticket updates and collecting cybersecurity compliance evidence. Ticket documentation creates a history of the issue and allows another technician to continue the work if necessary. Compliance documentation helps an organization demonstrate that security requirements and controls have been reviewed. These experiences have shown me that documentation is not an administrative task separate from technical work. It is an essential part of completing that work responsibly.

Skill 3: Automation

Automation is the third skill I selected for my ePortfolio. As I gained more experience in IT support, I noticed that many technical processes require technicians to repeat the same actions across multiple computers. PowerShell and remote management tools can be used to complete these tasks more quickly and consistently.

I have developed and used PowerShell scripts to install approved software, remove applications, clear temporary files, and perform workstation maintenance. One artifact demonstrating this skill is an automated software deployment script. The script downloads an approved installer, performs a silent installation, verifies the result, and records information in a log file. This allows a technician to deploy software remotely without manually completing every installation step.

Automation has taught me to think carefully about how a process works from beginning to end. Before automating a task, I must understand the manual procedure, the permissions it requires, the possible errors, and the method used to verify success. I also have to consider the potential effect on the user and the device. A mistake in a script can affect multiple systems quickly, so testing and limiting its scope are important.

This skill is valuable in cybersecurity because security teams often manage large numbers of users, devices, alerts, and vulnerabilities. Automation can support software deployment, patching, account administration, evidence collection, and incident response. It allows professionals to spend less time on repetitive actions and more time analyzing complex security concerns.

Describing My Skills to an Employer or Supervisor

When speaking with an employer or supervisor, I would describe myself as a developing cybersecurity professional who combines technical knowledge with practical IT experience. I can investigate technical problems, communicate my findings, document repeatable procedures, and use scripting to improve routine processes.

I would explain my skills by providing specific examples instead of simply listing them. For troubleshooting, I could describe how I diagnosed a printer driver issue and restored printing and scanning functionality. For documentation, I could discuss the laptop deployment knowledge base that I created for other technicians. For automation, I could explain how I developed PowerShell scripts that install software, record results, and reduce repetitive work.

These examples show that I can apply my knowledge in real situations. They also demonstrate that I understand the effect technical work has on users and organizational operations.

Strongest Skill Reflection

Troubleshooting is currently my strongest professional skill. My role requires me to work with many different types of problems, and each ticket gives me an opportunity to improve my technical reasoning. I have learned how to remain patient, ask useful questions, research unfamiliar problems, and adjust my approach when the first solution does not work.

Troubleshooting also connects closely with my documentation and automation skills. After resolving an issue, I can document the solution so it can be used again. If the process is repetitive and appropriate for scripting, I may be able to automate it. Troubleshooting is therefore the foundation that supports the other two skills.

Although troubleshooting is my strongest skill, I still have room to improve. I want to develop a deeper understanding of networks, security monitoring, and incident investigation. Improving in these areas will allow me to move beyond resolving common technical issues and take on more advanced cybersecurity responsibilities.

Applying My Skills Going Forward

As I continue my education and career, I plan to apply these skills in security operations, risk management, governance, compliance, and threat detection. Troubleshooting will help me investigate alerts and identify the causes of security problems. Documentation will help me communicate findings, preserve evidence, and support compliance requirements. Automation will help me manage repetitive tasks and respond to security events more efficiently.

My academic work has given me a foundation in cybersecurity concepts, while my professional experience has shown me how those concepts affect real organizations and users. Together, troubleshooting, documentation, and automation have prepared me to continue growing from an IT support role into a cybersecurity focused position. I plan to strengthen these abilities through additional coursework, certifications, security operations experience, and continued hands on practice.

Introduction My academic studies and professional experiences have helped me develop several skills that are important in both information technology and cybersecurity.
