Mullen Fellowships<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">Named for the founder of our journal, Richard \u201cDale\u201d Mullen (1915-1998), the Mullen fellowships are awarded by\u00a0<i>Science Fiction Studies\u00a0<\/i>to support archival research in science fiction.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">We have three categories of awards:<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><b><span lang=\"en-CA\">1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span lang=\"en-CA\">Postdoctoral Research Fellowship<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><u><span lang=\"en-CA\">Amount<\/span><\/u><span lang=\"en-CA\">: Up to $3000<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><u><span lang=\"en-CA\">Number<\/span><\/u><span lang=\"en-CA\">: 2 awards each year<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><u><span lang=\"en-CA\">Qualifications<\/span><\/u><span lang=\"en-CA\">: Candidates must have received their PhD degree but must not hold (or be contracted to begin) a tenure-track position. Also eligible are ABD students who have not yet been conferred their degree but who are scheduled to do so before taking up the award, for research in support of a new project only. The relation between the new research and the topic of the dissertation should be clarified in the proposal, particularly in cases of closely related projects.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><b><span lang=\"en-CA\">2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span lang=\"en-CA\">PhD Research Fellowship<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><u><span lang=\"en-CA\">Amount<\/span><\/u><span lang=\"en-CA\">: Up to $2000<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><u><span lang=\"en-CA\">Number<\/span><\/u><span lang=\"en-CA\">: 3 awards each year<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><u><span lang=\"en-CA\">Qualifications<\/span><\/u><span lang=\"en-CA\">: Research must be in support of a dissertation, and students may apply at any stage of their degree. The proposal should make it clear that applicants have familiarized themselves in some detail with the resources available at the library or archive they propose to use. Projects with an overall science fiction emphasis, other things being equal, will receive priority over projects with a more tangential relationship to the field.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><b><span lang=\"en-CA\">3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span lang=\"en-CA\">MA Thesis Research Fellowship<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><u><span lang=\"en-CA\">Amount<\/span><\/u><span lang=\"en-CA\">: Up to $1000<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><u><span lang=\"en-CA\">Number<\/span><\/u><span lang=\"en-CA\">: 1 award each year<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><u><span lang=\"en-CA\">Qualifications<\/span><\/u><span lang=\"en-CA\">: Candidates may be in an MA program or in the MA phase of a combined graduate program. The award must be used in support of a graduate research project, which may be an article or an MA thesis. The proposal should specify which materials are unique to the archive the student proposes to visit and why they are essential to the project.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">Application Process<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">All projects must centrally investigate science fiction, of any nation, culture, medium or era.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">Project descriptions should concisely but clearly<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CA\">Define the project,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CA\">Include a statement describing the relationship of this project to science fiction as a genre and to sf criticism as a practice,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CA\">show familiarity with\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CA\">the specific holdings and strengths of the archive in which the proposed research will be conducted to explain why archival research is essential to the project, and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CA\">Offer a research plan (including time frame and budget) that is practical for the time-frame proposed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">Applications may propose research in\u2014but need not limit themselves to\u2014specialized sf archives such as the Eaton Collection at UC Riverside, the Maison d\u2019Ailleurs in Switzerland, the Judith Merril Collection in Toronto, or the SF Foundation Collection in Liverpool. Proposals for work in general archives with relevant sf holdings\u2014authors\u2019 papers, for example\u2014are also welcome.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">For possible research locations, applicants may wish to consult the partial list of sf archives compiled in\u00a0<i>SFS<\/i>37.2 (July 2010): 161-90. This list is also available online at: &lt;<a>http:\/\/sfanthology.site.wesleyan.edu\/files\/2010\/08\/WASF-Teachers-Guide-2Archives.pdf<\/a>&gt;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">Applications should be written in English and should include<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CA\">the project description (approximately 500 words),<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CA\">a work plan and an itemized budget,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CA\">a cover letter clearly identifying which fellowship or award is sought,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CA\">an updated curriculum vitae, and<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\"><span lang=\"en-CA\">5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-CA\">two letters of reference, including one from the faculty supervisor in cases of PhD and MA research.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">Students who receive awards must acknowledge the support provided by\u00a0<i>SFS<\/i>\u2019s Mullen Fellowship program in any completed theses, dissertations or published work that makes use of research supported by this fellowship. After the research is conducted, each awardee shall provide\u00a0<i>SFS\u00a0<\/i>with a 500-word report on the results.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\"><span style=\"color: black;font-family: georgia,serif\">Successful candidates will be reimbursed for expenses incurred conducting research, up to the amount of the award, once they complete the research and submit relevant receipts.
