Professional Goals

Goal 1: Develop an Understanding of the Legislative Process.

It is important that I gain an in-depth understanding of how legislation is developed, debated, and passed within the General Assembly. I plan to achieve this by actively engaging in all aspects of the legislative process, including attending committee meetings, reviewing proposed bills, and shadowing legislators. Taking detailed notes and asking questions will give me a better understanding of the process and political influence during policy making. I will also take advantage of any training sessions available to reinforce the ideas. This hands-on experience will provide me with insights that I can apply to my future career in public health.

Goal 2: Strengthen my Professional Communication Skills.

With this internship, I want to improve my communication skills. I want to communicate effectively in a professional setting in verbal and written form. Communication skills include drafting reports, summaries, or memos related to the legislative process. I intend to seek feedback from my supervisor and peers to identify areas of improvement. This goal will enhance my ability to convey important messages to a diverse audience, which is especially important in a healthcare setting.

Goal 3: Build a Strong Professional Network

By the end of this internship, I want to establish meaningful relationships with professionals in policy and the government. To achieve this, I plan to attend networking events, participate in projects, and initiate conversations with legislators, staff members, and fellow interns. I will also maintain a professional presence by following up with contacts via email. Learning from people’s experiences will give me valuable knowledge of potential opportunities. These connections will help me stay informed about public health policies and open doors to future health education, policy, and research opportunities.
