Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs – CYSE 201S

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs established the ideology that there are 5 stages of essential aspects of life that all humans strive to achieve. Those needs can evolve and change as a person subsequently evolves and changes through life. It is theorized that as the lower level needs are met then the person will try to achieve the higher levels as time goes on. Those levels include Physiological, Safety, Belongingness and Love, Esteem, and finally, Self-Actualization. When looking introspectively, I can attribute each level of needs to personal experiences within my life and correlate the use of technology with them as well. Physiological revolves around food, water, warmth, and rest which are basic human necessities. Although I feel like technology doesn’t offer these needs, it does make them more readily available and more comfortable to utilize. For example, microwaves/air fryers to provide warm edible food, refrigerators that dispense water and ice, and space heaters/air conditioning for temperature regulation within my household. Safety is the second tier and it basically encompasses a sense of security and protection, which I can attribute to electronic home security systems and Antivirus software like McAfee/Kaspersky on home computers and laptops I use. The third tier is Belongingness and Love, which I can empathetically connect to my use of social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, etc to keep in touch with my friends and family. I believe it is important to connect with people of like-minds and technology gives people that opportunity in line with dating apps, discussion boards, podcasts, etc. The fourth tier discusses the need for prestige and a feeling of accomplishment for the sake of personal esteem. Everyone desires the sensation that they are contributing to the world, feel like they achieved something that was unlikely, and chase the feeling of dopamine when submitting something they possess pride in. I can attach to this concept with the use of blogging on the computer, making photos/videos to share with the general public, and creating art in the form of music or games to test their success. The final stage of the Hierarchy of Needs is self-actualization, dealing with a person trying to reach their true potential and maximize talent. This one is constantly debated as the toughest to achieve and arguably, some people might never find success with this criteria. I utilize technology to try and make myself a better person everyday, for example, ODU online degree opportunities to learn new skills and I also enjoy Youtube tutorial videos for DIY projects. That concludes my experiences and how I related to each stage of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
